Well, it still runs, but like shit. Now it's a 3 year old cheapo dell I got a great deal on, but I'd rather not buy her a new computer and I wont let her touch mine.

It's running ultra slow, ULTRA SLOW. doing something as simple as minimizing firefox takes 10 seconds or so. The computer also freezes quite a bit. I think I might need to format it but I haven't formatted in about 5 years so I would appreciate some help.

    here are my questions
    1. I dont think I have a format disk, do I need one? can I download it from a torrent site?

    2. It's windows XP, I remember years ago and old HP computer I had had the option to format under my computer. Is there a similar option from Dell somewhere?

    3. is there anything I could try to do to fix the problem without formating? I downloaded a great antivirus program called "threatfire" which checks for viruses, tojans, key loggers etc. Any recommendations?

Hit control-alt-delete to bring up task manager. under the applications tab shut off EVERYTHING, then, tell us everything that is running under the processes tab, take a screenshot or just type it all into a new post

If it's a Dell I can get you a Dell format CD ... we have shit loads of them here. XP SP3 and a few Vista. They don't put that format partition on the drives anymore ... well not on the 1000 Dell's we have.

    P.S. F+N thinks you're dead. Ahahaha

Some processes are vital (a couple dozen at the most, I have run XP with 4), the applications tab can be empty though.

    Shut down WUS854GC.exe

The rest look clean, I looked up some of them that I didn't recognize and they turned out to be related to threatfire.
The offending app may be hiding in services, so the next step is to give us your list of running services, which can be found by typing services.msc into start->run and sorting by "status" to show only the ones that are loaded.

How much hard drive space is available on your OS drive?

Is your hard drive full? Windows will run a lot slower on very low hard drive space...

because your system appears to be clean.

    log looks clean
    some things you could try:
    uninstall apps you don't use
    download and run ccleaner
    defrag

    elephant looks stoned btw

29 procs running and system is ultra slow means soemthing else is wrong that probably isn't software related. procs are clean what you have is what you need running.

    Do hardware diagnostics.

yeah I know it's pretty clean, I try to maintain and teach her how to use her computer but it just seem to run like shit for no reason. Theres almost nothing on the drive but her school stuff. This computer was ment for internet and word processing... and the day I got it it was pretty fast.

I wonder if it's the hardware, how do I run a hardware diagnostic?

its usually software that bogs down a pc
that's why i suggested those things in my previous post
clean the garbage, and defrag will help a lot

if hardware,.. it could be overheating. CPUs throttle down if it reaches a certain high temp. clean the dust bunnies.
other than that,.... its the hdd or ram.

The F12 diagnostic program that comes with some computers aren't very effective in my experience. I have ran into bad ram using memory testing tools like unbuntu's mem checker and docmem that these onboard versions do not detect.

Seatools has a drive checking program that you can use and speedfan is another tool that can check temp and drive status as well

Take the PC outside and open the case.
Take a can of compressed air and blow ALL THAT SHIT that is inside the case out onto the grass.

A can of compressed air is really the best tool for this. You may be tempted to use a vacum cleaner, but that can create a static charge that can destroy the processor, mobo and other vitals.

It's pretty easy to crank up the pressure too high on an air compressor, though. One good thing about the cans of compressed air is they're impossible to fuck up with.
