At first I was wondering what the big fuss was about with Canon and why they have about 70% market share and why Nikon was so far behind.

After going through numerous forums and websites I have come to a few conclusions about both companies.

It seems as though Canon has faster AF and FPS for relatively the same price (d80 vs 30d).

The IQ at high ISO is better.

The lense selection is wider for Canon (plus cheaper for an equivalent Nikon).

The only downfall I see is the lack of CLS (easily resolved by buying the wireless adaptor)

The only pluses I see for Nikon are the ergonomics (which doesn't translate to better IQ) and an all round lense (18-200vr)

    what do you guys think?

I know the Canon vs Nikon debate has been going on forever but there is always a best and better. As far as I can tell, the Canon system is currently the best.

    :noes:

BTW I just purchased a d80 to try out and I am not too impressed. The ergonomics of this thing is Awesome though.

    30d vs d80 isn't fair.

d80 should be compared to the 400d, and the d200 to the 30d.

I think you'll find that a much better comparison.

Nikon is also improving in the high iso race, so much so that you'd be hard pressed to find a real difference in a similar print.

I think it was a much larger difference a few years back than it is now.

My uncle has had Nikon stuff for ages. Then one year swapped everything over to Canon. Within a year or so he was back to Nikon. I asked him about it and was told the Canon stuff wouldn't hold up to the constant use he was putting it through (he shoots for National Geographic). A normal story is about 12,000-15,000 photos taken. So even though the Nikon's were more expensive and a little bit heavier they the better deal for him.

Really it's alot like the GM or Ford debate. Somepeople really like GM, some really like Ford. For me, since I don't shoot for a living, it has more to do with what I can get for the money.

You have overlooked too many things for me to work up any enthusiasm for writing an informative post.

    Too much work.

nah, I'll just sackride Canon so I fit in on OT.

EDIT: the punchline on the debate is that neither one is better than the other.

Well I'm just more familiar with the Canon name, which is why I went Canon. If I probably heard the Nikon name first, I would have gone with them. :o

Plus I like how the white lenses look. :mamoru:

    all nikons
better metering system, wider spread of AF points (is ther really anything outside the middle of the viewfinder in the 5d?)

    d2xs
    Image Overlay and Multiple Exposure
The Multiple Exposure function creates a single image from up to 10 exposures. The D2Xs also offers an Image Overlay function that merges selected RAW (NEF) files already stored on the CF card to create a new image file within the camera.

The eye-level viewfinder features frame coverage of virtually 100% and a 19.9mm eyepoint. Information bars along the bottom and right edges display the current white balance mode, image quality and size settings, ISO setting and more.

    In-camera Image Trimming
RAW, TIFF and JPEG images taken using the D2Xs can be trimmed within the camera to produce images of reduced display sizes ranging from 640x480 to 2560x1920 pixels. The smaller files that result can help improve workflow efficiency by eliminating the time required to download and perform software editing within a computer.

Lithium-ion Battery System with Even Greater Power
The EN-EL4a rechargeable lithium-ion battery retains the same form, but features significantly increased capacity that delivers enough power for up to 3400 shots per charge. The system's real-time status display gives accurate feedback on the percentage of remaining battery charge, the number of shots taken since the last charge, the overall status of service life, as well as notification when calibration is recommended. Furthermore, the Battery can be recharged at any time or any level, features extended service life, and performs well at low temperatures.

    GPS support (optional)
With the optional MC-35 GPS Adapter Cord, location information such as latitude, longitude, altitude and heading (direction) can be transferred from a GPS device and recorded with the shooting data for each image.

they now have a grip with wireless ftp technology for the d200, where as canon only has it for the 1 series, and its 800 + a PITA.

    I'm canon crew.

I don't like how the nikons wheels are placed.

And the meter was tiny, and hard to read. I think I was fucking with a d70s.
