I got the generic one on ebay (meh) like two months ago, took it out, used it, and put it away.

Took it out today, wanted to take some long exposure and self-portraits while on the bike trainer, and it wouldn't do shit. Swapped in a new battery, still nothing. Read on the auction website that you have to hold it at a certain angle to the camera. I swear I tried it a million times all over.

I want to do some long exp shots of the fireworks this weekend, but I can't really without this stupid remote. Any ideas?

I don't know how Nikons work but on Canons, we have the option for single shot, burst mode, and timer mode. For my remote to work, I have to be on timer mode.

Your user manual might have more info, too.

make a wired one.. cost me $0 because i had a plug and a couple switches lying around.

    100% reliable, no batteries.

Yeah sorry, I should have expected this question. I've tried this both in remote mode and timed remote mode. Neither seems to work. I was just hoping I'd missed some setting I need to have set...I've read both the manual and Thom Hogan's D70 Guide...

I spent $675 on the camera, so thus only $9 on the remote :big grin:

    Yeah, I'm a cheapass.

I've had a generic remote for my D70 (which cost me $600 with the 18-70mm :)), and it works perfectly fine, very far away... very reliably. I mean it's a button that sends one IR signal - not very hard to make! I'm not going to spend $15 on a Nikon one!
