When I play some basketball or sometimes when I jog, my shins (somewhere around there) start hurting like hell. I would think this area would get used to the pain and would stop after I keep on playing basketball for about a month but it still hurts everytime..

What can I do to prevent this?

that actually happened to me too about a year ago when i did a lot of jogging. i'd run for like 15 minutes and then my shins start to really hurt, and makes it pretty hard to complete the jog. but when i started stretching for like a minute before actually jogging, it helped, and then i didn't have it anymore. that might not be related though. i'm not sure what happened, but i don't get it anymore.

maybe try some stretching and hope it goes away soon.

Try running heel/toe if you are currently just slamming down your feet.

I've had them in the past.. make sure you stretch before/after, and icing helps if in pain.. they usually say take a break from the activity for a while...

When I got them back in high school and taking time off wasn't an option due to sports they'd make us put our legs in a fucking freezing ass cold whirlpool/ice bath for 20 minutes after each practice.

Seemed to help, so try icing them I guess.

I had the same problem back then. I read somewhere that walking on your toes or heels every now and then, even around the house, helps as it'll stretch out the muscles. I did that for a while and the pain never came back.

I have them as well... and i'm with everyone else in saying that it sucks. Resting and stretching is the best I suppose.

it's not a disease you can "cure"

this kind of thing can happen to any muscle that's put under any stress that far exceeds what it's used to. there are things you can do to prevent it or alleviate the pain, but it's not like there's some magic vaccine out there for shin splints

    read what everyone posted. stretch.

nope. your going to have to take it easy for a while. massage your legs, use icy hot or something similar, and ice wraps.
