Well, I finally got the car over to the shop a few days ago. Its been sitting at my work since August :( The car runs and drives nice for sitting for months. I bought it off ebay from a guy in Cali, so the car has pretty much no rust on it. The underside is very nice and the body is straight. It has a few spots that someone fixed with bondo at the bottom of the doors but besides that, its a nice starting point. What is in store for this car you ask? Well, here's the list in a nutshell:

    Built RB26 w/ TH400 trans
    Custom fuel system
    Custom driveshaft
    Custom FMIC
    LSD for the R200
    Aftermarket gauges all around
    Various body pieces

The body will stay pretty much stock looking, I want to concentrate under the hood. So maybe a set of 15s w/ fender flares, I have a 72 rear bumper coming, glass hood, front air dam and maybe a rear spoiler. The styling of this car doesn't need much work, its nice as is. I'm sure there's alot I'm missing but I'll update as I go along with it. Not sure what I want to do turbo wise yet, probably in the 40R area depending on $. If I find a cheap 42R or T72 I'll probably pick it up but I don't really need to go that big. 600whp in a car that weighs 2600# is enough I think ;) I just want something thats fun to take to the track and that is unique as well. I've wanted to do a RWD import for years since after I sold my first EVO. At the time it was going to be a 4G63 FD, but they were still too much at the time. Now its 5 years later and there are a few out there, so I wanted something different which is where the Z came in.

I found a place to get the engine/harness/ecu from in Canada for 2750 shipped, can't argue with that. I hope to order it next week. Once it comes in and I start the tear down process, I'll post those pics next. Here are some pics I took today, nothing great but you get the idea of what I'm starting with:

Hate to break it to you, but a RB26 swapped Z isn't that unique anymore :hsd:

Unique these days is a rotary or VH/VK swap into them.

Nice car though, what year is it?

  6. any shots of the motor?

Ya I know, they are out there but its not like every where you go theres a 70s Z w/ an RB26, at least not around here. Its a 76 280Z.

No shots of the engine, its just the stock L28 right now, not much to look at. Once the 26 arrives, I'll make sure to get pics of it.

I've seen that swap and the SR20DET swap. I like the RB26 because it stays with the inline 6cyl configuration that came with the car.

I'm meh on the RB swap these days. Way to high of a rice tax on the engines, and realistically, not that much power for the money that you'd be dumping into it.

These days my heart is set on a VH or VK swap into my Z. Overbore + centrifugal SC or two = win.

nice, i'm also about to pick up a 76 and still debating what way to take it. L28et, RB25, or SR.

after having 3 Z32s and still have 1, im just sick of V6/8. and my s13 with a SR is easy as hell to work on. i could careless myself of coolness ect. just reliability and hp.

    UPDATE 4/20

Just unloaded the 26 off the truck alittle while ago and here she is :)

So far this project has started off great because after taking off the pallet wrap, I found that it already has a PowerFC on it, along with tubular O2 housings and maybe aftermarket turbos. Once I get an engine stand, I'll take off the pan and see if my luck can continue with an already built bottom end. There is RTV around the pan and the head has a metal headgasket so at least the engine was apart at one time, whether thats good or bad I'll find out. Stay tuned.

  14. sweet, in for this build.

    5/2 UPDATE

Got the turbo side of the engine stripped today. What a fun job that was :( I'd hate to work on these all the time w/ the twins to work around, not fun lol. Turbos look to be a great shape. Not shaft play or cracked housings, should be able to resell them. Checked the bearings last night and they looked pretty nice. No major wear that I could see. Too bad no forged internals though, oh well, I'm fine with that since the bottom end was in one piece. Once I get the head off I'll see what the cylinders look like. Here are acouple pics I took:

Gotta love the oil pan/front diff marriage here, interesting design

Looks like fun. I kinda wish I could work on it; I've never had the opportunity to do a complete teardown and rebuild before.

Things are working out pretty well so far. I have almost 1000$ in parts sold of it :) Should help when its time to get rods/pistons. I'm also thinking about selling the 26 shortblock complete and getting an RB30 shortblock and building that, not sure yet though.
