I'm guessing to get a shot of lightning you just set a long exposure and wait?

    (I'm a noob, leave me be :))

There are also lightning triggers you can buy that snap shots when the light levels change, i guess for people who dont want to use long exposures.

i tried once during a lightning storm to snap a picture. frustration was the key word.

i didnt get ONE shot of a bolt, i think i was just trying to time it perfectly and get a shot. no tripod or real long exposure or anything like that...

90% of what you see of lightning is the after glow in your eyes (from the bleaching of your retina from the brightness)

so the best way to do it is with a tripod and long exposure i assume?

yes, I usually shoot 6" or 8" bursts but you theoretically could shoot 30" if you wanted to. I just don't like any extra light in mine. but if you're in a dark area without light around, you could do 30". patience is the key though. I usually put it on the lowest ISO and change my white balance (can't remember the setting I used last time though).

I got a capture from my backyard on my old P+S canon A40 like 3 years ago. 2 second exposures.

MawcDrums, those are awesome. I hope you don't mind if I post a couple of scenery pics I took in here. I don't really want to make a new thread in this forum yet. I haven't lurked enough to know the culture in here... but I wanted to contribute....
