I'm on my third drive (in the past 4 years) which is a Pioneer. It's started reading discs really slowly, then eventually it just stopped burning data DVDs.

Could this be power supply problem?

    Could also be heat.

I've never had or seen disc drives fail.

Have you tried cleaning the laser? Is it in a really dusty environment? Does the PC still detect the drives? Does the drive still open and close when you press the button and have the lights turn on?

Try Lite-On or Plextor, if you haven't already.

Also, try to arrange your computer's fans so there's more air being pulled in than being pushed out -- that will keep dust from getting sucked in through the front of your DVD drive.

I just dusted it with an air can. Works fine now, but the other times it failed/died they were either randomly with not progression into it.
