Took the XD and the P99 to the range today at Bass Pro Shops (where I
also purchased the P99). When I bought it I noticed that with certain types
of hand positions it would blow the mag out while firing. With a proper grip
    it seemed to be ok.

For fun I tried shooting it one-handed and it blew the mag out. I asked the
range officer about it, he tried, blew the mag out. He went and grabbed a
gunsmith, he tried, same result. They put in a 2nd spring to stiffen the mag
release to check our hypothesis that the recoil alone was shaking the mag
    release but it didn't help.

Anyway, I cleaned it up, took it back up to the BPS (forgot to get my fishing
liscense anyway) and they're going to handle the shipping and whatnot. What
sort of turnaround should I expect?

    I presume that it's going to go to Smith&Wesson (it's a German built P99
    though, not a clone).

when you say "blew the mag out" do you mean that you hit the magazine release?

I don't think all three of them would make that mistake though.

I wonder what is causing it... seems weird.

Yeah, at first I thought somehow I was hitting the mag release, which is
reasonable since my index (trigger) finger is pretty gimped from nerve damage.
However 4 people other than me have seen the same thing with my P99.
It's impossible to fire single-hand. 1st or 2nd round the mag goes flying down
the range (after it bounces off your nuts)

When the magazine ejects it does so with considerable force, a bit more than
what you see if you just hit the mag release with a loaded mag.

My first thought was that I was hitting the mag release, which made sense
after I improved my grip and it didn't happen anymore. (new grip puts my
index finger bracing the underside of the trigger guard and allows for a little
    less recoil).

Then I thought, well maybe I'm limp wristing it, it's stovepiping, and instead
of jamming the slide, the slide is closing and forcing the mag down.

Anyway, the gunsmith beefed up the mag release spring (put a 2nd spring
inside the one that's already there) to no avail. After that he said "bring the
case in (I carry to the range in my bag) and we'll send it back to Walther".

    Sort of disappointing really.

Oh yeah...was funny watching the range officer, who is a pretty good shooter, shoot
it with one hand. It has a recoil like a freaking mule it seems. He did put his first
3 rounds (albeit he had to put the mag back in each time) into a quarter sized space.

Hmm never heard of that happening. My experience with s&w customer service has been about the best I've ever had. I call in a problem and they mail me a prepaid UPS next day air sticker. I frop the gun off at UPS and it comes back by next day air, usually within a week, sometimes 2 depending on how busy they are.
