I worked my ass off all fucking day and night (I was working on Spec for RETNA, House for Tao and Lavo, Journalist for 944, and party picture guy for SpyOnVegas)...

Night started off at 4pm to get parking on the Strip (exits closed at 5pm) parked at Treasure island which is about a block away from the venetian where i needed to be. Red carpet check in was at 715 (thats right i fucking had to wait and chill and do PR photos prior to the carpet) Carpet consisted of Carmen Electra, Fergie, David Spade, Mena Suvari, Antonio Sabato Jr, Adam Beach, Brianna Evigan (soooo cute-hot in person, chick from Step Up 2) and a whole bunch of nobodies... Then had to shoot the Fergie concert for Retna (sorry guys cant post those, contract agreement), then inside the clubs till 3 am...

    Here are some pics.
    1 Carmen was looking fine

i love my sigma 24-60 2.8... If it had HSM it would be my primary lens for everything. But since it doesnt i have to use my 28-70L when i need to shoot without the flash assist beam. I cant wait till the sigma 24-70 HSM macro comes out! It supposed to be half the weight of the Brick and alot smaller too! :) Newer optics as well, similar to that of the sigma 50 1.4.

lance bass picture...was there some nipple peeking out that you ps'd over? :squint:

    also...
1-how does the red carpet work? im guessing you use an on camera flash?
2-do they walk by and intentionally look into every camera? because it seems like they just posed for you.
3-how did you get into that kind of work?

sorry for all the questions...im just interested.

    Thanks man! :)

    http://forums.offtopic.com/showthread.php?t=4046654

Thanks, i know it was really strange that he was there, and he is looking fucking old.

Naw no nipple. she was probably wearing a pasty just in case, alot of celebs are doing that now.

1a- Red Carpets are a strange beast. You have to be invited to via the PR agency that is running the carpet. And you are only invited when you are working for a media outlet in which they feel will help get the coverage out in the world. And pretty much knowing them. Here in Vegas there are the known regulars that show up to every carpet. Erik Kabik, Ethan Miller, Denise Truscello, Lee Roberts, Scott Harrison, Chris Weeks, Myself, and a handful of others. So we always help each other out, even though we are competeing most of us are seasoned enough to be confident in our shots that we dont need to feel we are competing.

1b -I use on camera flash in manual mode set at the distance im going to be and where i went the celeb to stand. I use a bracket always, and i use my trusty sigma 24-60 2.8 (200 dollar lens FTW)

2 - They walk the carpet, most dont stop in front of every camera. You have to be very vocal. If you just sit on the carpet and dont say anything you will never get the shot. I always try to wear something that helps me stand out. And i always say "Hey XXXX, please look at teh yellow shirt, and i always put my left finger in the air and see "Over here please" and always say thank you. You have a splt second to get the three necessity shots. You need a full length, you need a mid length, and you need a headshot. I can do those three shots within half a second only needing to focus once. Its knowing your distance scale and aperture. I start off at full length set my focus and when they look at me I snap, zoom, snap, zoom, snap. The rest is just fluff, gettign detail shots like what kind of shoes they are wearing, sometimes hand shots due to their jewelry, etc...

3 - You have to work your way up. You have to shoot the crappy carpets first (the once that have a bunch of nobodies), make a name for yourself and hope you get noticed with your work. Talk to everyone, be friendly to everyone, especially the PR agency. They will help you in soooo many ways. But most of all you have to shoot for something. Become a freelance newspaper shooter or one of those weekly circulations something that will help you get on the carpet. Practice practice practice. you dont know how many days and nights i spent practicing in front of a wall, various distance at various flash powers to know and gauge how many feet people are away from me and what aperture i need to be at if i have a static flash power. I would hate to get a job to do the carpet and the photos turn out to be junk.

    Red carpet tips:
    1. Always dress appropriately
    2. Always have business cards
    3. Get their early, atleast 30 min before media check-in (this is normally 45min prior to the first arrival)
    4. Shoot in MANUAL flash (Most carpet backdrops are white, freaks out all types of ETTL)
    5. Get a bracket
    6. Shoot Full, mid, and head shots
    7. Be vocal
    8. Be friendly and courteous
    9. CUSTOM WHITE BALANCE!
    10. Direct flash with flip down wide panel
    11. Try to kill the ambient light, you have no idea how many shots i have ruined when i was starting due to video lights from the video interviews. Or the horrible stage lighting they have.
    12. Have some sort of battery power pack.
    13. Try to have fun, if you are relatively young like myself, this is an opportunity for a great career, take advantage of it.

Oh yeah and the most important part, you have to live in a city where these carpets happen!

yeah, but i dont necessarily use it for that, i use it to get rid of the directional shadows when in portrait orientation

sure, when the flash is on the hotshoe, when you turn it to teh portrait orientation aka gripside, you will get these horrible side shadows.

except the sample is already diffused a bit. which means the shadows are a bit lighter than they normally would be. But you get teh idea.
