I have 2 Sony DVD burners but they don't perform too well. Sometimes a disk is not written correctly eventhough the burn-process finishes succesfully. So I've added a Plextor-burner and use that one for burning.

I now use the Sony burners as readers mostly (sometimes I burn 3 DVD's together), but even then they are not performing like I want them to be. I have certain CD/DVD's that appear unreadable in the Sony burners, but run fine in the Plextor or my unknown-brand CD-RW/DVD combo in my laptop.

Regarding the harddisks, I own several Seagate models and they are quiet and fast.

All-in-all I think you have a nice machine.
