I've waited so long for this for so long from CMP and yesterday she finally arrived on my doorstep. I opened up the box and she was wrapped in this silver bag, I pulled her out of the bag and she was flat out filthy and disgusting, she had 2 inches of thick cosmoline all over her, even all the internal parts of the bolt, inside the barrel, etc. had cosmoline it was nasty, I had to wear rubber gloves just to handle her.

I went to Home Depot and bought 1 gallon of Boiled Linseed Oil and 1 gallon of mineral spirits. When I got home I took apart the entire rifle down to the last roll pin and began hand picking off all the excess cosmoline as best I could, i then took the mineral spirits and gave everything a bath, let it air dry, then took a heat gun to melt out any remaining cosmoline, needless to say there was a lot left. After that I made a 50/50 mixture of Boiled Linseed Oil and mineral spirits and hand rubbed the entire stock and handgrips to give her a beautiful finish (they used BLO on the original stocks when they made them, so it looks great).

I cleaned all the metal parts and then let them soak in CLP for an hour or so, then I put the rifle back together and she looked spectacular. This whole thing took about 8 hours to do and was a major pain in the ass... I am NOT looking forward to my M1 Garand that's going to be arriving soon from CMP .

And without further ado, the pictures:

The wood still looks a bit dirty, you might wanna spend more time with the heat gun or try an oven.

Her barrel and everything is in great condition.

I think I got pretty lucky, because CMP doesn't grade their 1903's it's just luck of the draw and i've seen some people who have gotten god some awful 03's.

Your Garand should come pretty much clean since most are all personally inspected etc. At least all mine have.

    Nice 03 though, I'm trying to find a Z prefix A4.

I placed my order for a Service Grade M1 Garand with CMP back in early December and it still hasn't arrived yet, it's been almost 4 months now.

I ordered my 1903 only about a month and a half ago.

thats nice on a really nice stock, but this stock shows its age and has pits and scratches (which obviously can be worked out with some minor sanding), but that really takes away from the classic appeal to me.

imho leave it exactly the way it is. its more than perfect that way

Nice 03. Please don't use the dishwasher method on your stock if you want to keep any historical value.. If you want to clean your stock I highly suggest Formby's Furniture Refinisher. It's good product that won't do any real harm to your wood.

Also here's a pic of my CMP rifles:
