My computer is a dell 4600, I bought it before getting into college in 03.

MY monitor has stated doing this thing where it will work for a while (all of last night it was fine) but then the monitor will go blank (no in powersave mode) and the power light will blink green. A faint white blink can be seen at the bottom of the screen too. At this point the monitor cannot be turned off, the power button does nothing, none of the other buttons do anything. If the monitor is unplugged then plugged back in it will continue to do the same thing.

The computer (although older now) is fine and it's not a problem with that. I'm posing this from the computer with the monitor unplugged but S-vid to my tv, so it looks like crap to type and read.

    The monitor is a 15 inch E151FPb.

I'de like an LCD screen, it does not have to be huge and it does not have to be fancy. I don't game on this computer at all. I'de like to keep the price under $200 and of course the lower the better but I don't want something I'm going to have trouble from right off the start. I know you guys are all crazy about expensive ass monitors but that is not what I need.

    Thank you for any input.

    - under 200$
    - size not a priority
    - non gaming computer
    - local pickup (big box store) would be better

most of the Benq screens are good, same with most samsung and viewsonic screens. I'm sure you can find a decent one for 200 bucks, 17 or 19.

Actually, went out and looked around couldn't find shit at the retail stores. Any suggestions for places to order from online or other places that I might check to look. Went to best buy, target, circuit city, office max, walmart....none of them had shit for computers (or they were overpriced)

    Thanks again.

Huge auto detection problems, and pretty bad failure rates. We're sticking with Samsungs, no where near the same issues.

auto detect? Sorry I don't use something as archaic as VGA so I wouldn't know what you're rambling about.

Most office desktops still don't come with DVI.

I judge a brand by its entire range - I like Lenovos not just because their high end stuff is stable, but also because their low-end stuff is too. The fact that Acer admitted to us that it was a known problem and there was no fix didn't impress us.

I recommend cheap discrete cards for all machines -- including office machines. It's amazing how much smoothing even simple tasks such as dragging 2d windows is compared to shitty onboard graphics.

Office workers aren't more efficient with DVI, so there's no point. Our engineers on the other hand are a completely different story. They get custom built machines.

What is the purpose of DVI over VGA?
