So umm, I woke up this morning and my 19" CRT monitor had black smoke issuing from it. I unplugged it completely, and it has since stopped smoking... but now the entire room smells like formeldahyde.

Suggestions? Anyone know the possible source(s) of said smoke? :hsugh:

monitors are very expensive to fix, youll prolly have to trash it and buy a new one. when electronics are made, they put some smoke in the components. if you let the smoke out, the part doesnt work anymore.

Seriously though. I'm speculating that it is probably a blown capacitor that started a small electrical fire. I plan on trashing it... but I'm just curious as to what EXACTLY happened.

If you don't talk to your monitors young, they sometimes take up smoking. Once they start, it is VERY hard to get them to stop. I blame society.

yeah, that is what it sounds like.

they really aren't that hard to fix if you have an electronics supply store close by and own a soldering iron.

I think it needs a new flux capacitor.

Bullshit. It's those goddamn liberal flip-floppers and their lack of good morals.

Get a flatscreen, they cost a small fortune for a good one but they don't have any of the high-voltage equipment that the old monitors do, and the newer ones don't have any of the streaking or ghosting effects that "hardcore gamers" despise.

Assuming the acid from the capacitor hasn't eaten through the copper wiring on the board, and the heat hasn't melted the board. A flatscreen is still a better proposition if the money is available.

The horrid stench that was issuing from my monitor indicates that stuff was probably melting inside... :hs:

Call me a wuss, but I'm too scared to toy around with the innards of a monitor. Don't want that sucker imploding on me. :hsd:

as long as you don't snap the neck off you dont have to worry about that.

I used to fix monitors for a living, it really isn't all that difficult :dunno:

Isn't it true, though, that monitor capicitors can hold a potentially lethal charge for several minutes after they have been unplugged?

lethal? no fucking way unless you have a bum ticker

I got the ever living shitfuck shocked out of me a few times, but that is because we messed with them while they were on for testing purposes. Grabbing the flyback while the boards are powered up is for the fucking lose :wtc:

if you want, you can remove the circuit boards and run a long screwdriver over the bottom of it to discharge all of the capacitors, it wont hurt anything and it looks cool as fuck :bigthumb:

after you do that you can mess with it. the caps at radio shack won't be more than a few bucks. take a nice hi res pic of your board and I can tell you what to replace.
