So I decided that since I am unable to compete in the worlds, that I would compete in a string of recent upcoming tournaments.

This weekend was best of the west, submission grappling tournament. I usually compete in the 150-160 class but did not feel like losing the five pounds in order to make weight. So I ended up doing 160-170 (welterweight) advanced.

In my first match I go up against a purple belt who I have beaten twice before in other tournaments. I figure I got this down, and I'm playing my game, but I get a little careless and he passes my guard :greddy:

my instructors were going crazy.. I have a pretty tough guard, they couldn't believe this dude just sliced through my half like that. I went nuts trying to catch up, but time ran out, and I lost.

I felt awful, so I decided to do the open. My friend was outside the building for most of this, so I didn't get a lot on video unfortunately =( I decided to do it on the spur of the moment. I never tried an open division before, so I was very nervous.

In my first match I get a friend of mine who I know through sherdog. We are always in the same division in tournaments, but somehow never get matched up. I put him in X-guard and he dives out, and I catch him in a toe hold as he's diving out. He taps.. This was the THIRD leglock he tapped to today. I felt awful about that =/ Sucks we had to eliminate eachother immediately that way.

Second match I went against this ripped up guy. I pulled guard, and he couldn't figure out how to pass. He kept doing the gesturing me up thing, and I kept butt scooting ala marcelo. Finally he came down for a sec and I caught an overhook and went from an omo plata to triangle. I locked it up very fast, and he picked me all the way up, and tried to walk off the mat with me! The ref gave me two points for this and nearly DQed him. He did a quick shake to get me to let go of the triangle, and I swept him. Time ran out. 4-0

In my third match I go against kevin casey. He's an ENORMOUS black guy from the rickson gracie academy. A brown belt. You may remember him recently getting knocked out by Minowa in Japan. I was kinda looking at everyone like :eek3::rofl::rofl::rofl: this is so ridiculous.

I pull guard, and start playing my game. I kept trying to dive under him for the X-guard, but he'd wrap his arm around my head and try to break my neck. I couldn't for the life of me move this guy around. However, I began to notice he couldn't pass either, and he kept diving for stupid leglocks and stuff, which I was quick to avoid. My instructor Marcel was coaching me and with about a minute left told me to lock my half guard, and as soon as I did this, Kevin slices through, and pins me down with his gorilla strength. Securing the 3-0 win.

Kevin goes onto face my team mate (brasa black belt) Rodrigo .. something.. i forgot his last name. Rodrigo puts up a good fight, but gets kneebarred. Rodrigo weighs about 150 lbs.

So I earn the chance to compete for third in the open. Guess who my opponent is? That first guy who beat me in my own weight division! So this was going to be the FOURTH time we've competed. I have a nice chat with him and we start our match.

I pull guard, and sweep him with the X very easily.. I land in side control and almost take his back momentarily. Unfortunately he recovers to half guard and sweeps me back!! 2-2 now..

I pull him in closed guard, and get pissed. I grab a kimura, and wait for him to try and yank his arm.. He yanks, and I crank behind his back and let out this crazy grunt type thing.. I got so frustrated with this dude for some reason. I realize later I even push his body off me. A little rude on my part.

So in the end, I got third in the open, and avenged the loss I took personally. My instructors were really disappointed when I lost to him originally :(

Heres a pic of the three open weight finalists :)

This is don stoner and I about to compete for the third time. Our matches were the only ones my friend got on video :(

Overall I'm okay with my performance. Wasn't perfect, and didnt ever get on top enough to try out my fancy passing.. but at least my losses werent ownages. Competing in the open was pretty fun actually! Everyone cheers for you when youre the smaller guy!

here is me getting my revenge :)

he got first in intermediate featherweight 140-150 (2 matches) only 4 guys

    so he did intermediate open.

he beat his first dude, and then went against a big black guy who he could've beaten. I think the guy was awful, but my friend tried playing guard (he's a wrestler) and hasnt quite developed his guard enough to attack a larger guy like that. The black guy ended up getting a kimura on him and tapping him out.

Oh, when he's up on his side in the beginning you can use your knee like a pillow and pull him onto you bringing him into back
