Most people here will tell you:

    - Asus motherboard
    - AMD chip
    - Nvidia graphics (I prefer ATI, but whatever)
    - Rambus RAM is sweet stuff, but only the older Intel boards support it. Corsair or OCX are good brands for DDR RAM.
    - I like Sony optical drives. Plextor and Panasonic (aka Matsushita) are good too. Steer clear of the HD-DVD vs. Blu-Ray competition for the time being, and get a nice safe DVD-RAM drive.
    - Don't buy a cheap power supply. I've done fine with Vantec, but others will tell you to buy other brands. Mostly what you want is a high maximum-wattage rating and a quiet fan. The best compromise between cool and quiet right now is a single 120mm fan mounted in the bottom face of the PSU.

Do you really need a $250 case?

Why would you get a SATA primary drive, but go IDE on the second one? You can definitely find another large hard drive for under $300.
