I'm defintely looking for some C&C.. I can see a lot of area for improvement (mostly composition) but I don't think they came out too bad.. I had to use some flash as a fill on the ends of the stage because of the lighting..

Rebel XTi, 50mm 1.8, and Kit lens... On camera flash.

1 Cut off singer's arm and elbow.
2 Subject lost in the background
    3 no subject
4 play with some slower shutter speeds to allow a sense of motion... unless she was standing still the whole time.
5 tighter crop/zoom, or just get closer (since you're working with the 50/1.8
6 Subdue the highlit keyboard in pp, as it takes away from your subject. also rule of 3rds.
7 I like... though don't crop quite so tight? add a little to the right (if you cropped it out to begin with)
8 you killed the man by cutting off his head :noes:
10 should have focused more on the drummer, than the drums
11 (hard to do in the light i'm sure) slower f/stop to get more of the trio in focus.
12 compositionally i like it, but the flash is a bit harsh, and looks garish.
13 Cymbal in the foreground fucks an otherwise nice shot.

    thanks :)

It was mostly composition like I said, but the lighting was hard with the stage.. there were bright ass lights on the drummer, somewhat bright lights on the singer, a deep red light on the guitarist, and nothing at all on the bassist..

It was also hard with the room composition wise.. I wish I took a picture of it, it was this narrow narrow room..

like in #8, I had my back against the wall and thats the shot I got with the 50mm, if I could have stepped back a few feet I would definitely have done it.. I'm not a big fan of killing guys :(

Turbodude posted a bit of a how-here, as well as plenty of info and pointers posted here that should help you out. The general consensus seems to be that the nifty fifty is just the wrong damn lens for shooting in a club like that... get a medium zoom for the job. i.e. Tamron's 17-50/2.8 or similar...

    Thanks...

I guess I was more worried about noise than anything, which is kinda dumb..

I think these were all shot at iso 800... at 1600 my camera gets pretty noisy :(

How useable are high ISO's on the 5d lets say?

    a lot better than nikon.

i say just go for 1600 and if it's too noisy just make it B&W :mamoru:

well, that first part just isn't true at all. :ugh:

I've shot tons of concerts, weddings and ice hockey games at iso 1600 that come out well enough to print 11x14 with NO complaints from anyone.

    With a Nikon D80 (and now a D200.)

But turning overly noisy images black and white really can be a lifesaver!

    i use a D80 so i'm not a canon sack rider.

but from what i've seen, Canon > Nikon in terms of Noise at different ISO's

We're about to experience a before and after here.. I'm going to be shooting these guys again tomorrow night, only with a 85mm f/1.2 L this time :eek4:

I'm hoping the lens allows me to drop the on-camera flash!
