What type of selection system do you have? Lockout hubs? Manual shifter? Electronic switch?

  4. its a push button dealie between the A/C vents....electronic switch.

    its in a pattern like

    VE 4x4 button VE
    NT Low Range button NT

Ah the push button. It could be that rather than the transfer case. I'd take it in somewhere to get it checked out.

Explorers are notorious about non-engaging 4x4 if you dont use it or service it very often.

And besides, unless your stuck or towing really really heavy you shouldn't need it at all. Do you hear anything when you press it? If it was trying to engage and failing, you'd hear it.

did you make sure you held the button, in neutral, and you had the brake compressed? after that, you still have to wait like 10 seconds for it to engage
