    I have a toshiba SD-R6012 DVDRW drive.
I went out and bought some memorex dvd-r disks to copy some of my movies.

Nero keeps saying the disk is not writeable. Just sits there and keeps on "checking it".

It won't allow me to burn anything.

I tried installing new driver and firmware, says the device needed for update can't be found.

    Whats going on?

You bought disks that are too high a speed to be compatable with the drive? What speed are the disks, and what speed is the drive? Also, what software are you using (don't think it matters, just curious).

So, the drive is showing up in the BIOS and in the system information in Windows?
It sounds like it isn't being recognized at all which would seem to indicate that it is not a problem with media.

ok, i have a toshiba as well and have had the same problem.

If i don't wait long enough before trying to burn after closing drive it won't read. I have to wait about 8 seconds for it to read or what ever the fuck it's doing before it will allow me to burn or else it gives me the same message and i also use nero

Not exactly a scientifc or technical explanation but that's what works for me, but then again i'm a retard when it comes to tech stuff so that's all i got.

Basically my Toshiba drive takes wayyyyyy longer to get itself ready then my other drive, fucking sucks and i'll never buy toshiba again, are you waiting to make sure the drive has had time to do it's thing before you try to proceed

Blood, what media do you use to burn? I think it may be the media im trying to use. Heard this drive only works with high class dvdr's.

Similar experience - Toshiba / Nero.

It could very well be a sign your drive is going.
It could also be the media you're using.
You might want to try Taiyo Yuden / FujiFilm, or TDK's and see if any of those work for you.
