he said it will hurt my kidneys :wtc:

he also said hes never seen a study that has proven protein supps (ie whey) to be beneficial. (double blind studies etc)

I didn't have the ammo do dispute him and wasn't about to argue with a MD. I just gave the :hsugh: look and said "ok"

Fact: Just because you've finished med school doesn't make you a expert about everything medical.

I think they only supp that has been proven to do anything is fish oil.

But, the co-owner of my gym is a doctor and said that in medical school, and I believe that he said there are no classes about nutrition and diet - and if a doc ever tells you to change your diet, question where he got the information. And in general, Doctors can diagnose problems, but don't know shit about fitness.

Excessive protein does cause you kidneys to work harder which is why if you're on dialysis you don't want 300 grams a day. As long as there are no defects in the kidneys, you're fine.

    :ugh:

any supp that has been shown to increase a physiologically required chemical is proven to work if the person taking it isn't getting the RDA of that chemical through their normal diet

I don't have much faith in office doctors anyway... I've heard some pretty bad stuff.

For the record, my Family Pract. doc works out at a local gym and take protein himself.

doctors know very little about being healthy... they barely know about illness (which is what they treat). Preventative care is mantra, not a reality in medicine.

high protein with insufficient water intake can place strain on the kidneys. Though that more about water intake than the protein.

Doctors are good for writing prescriptions after you explain to them, in excrutiating detail and small words, why they need to write the script.

My last family doctor died at 44.
He was cool though. Was actually asking me about exercise and supps like creatine.

The one who replaced him... his first question was if I'm taking anabolic steroids.
