No spyware or adware installed. P4 2.4GHz, processor currently at 4%. 512MB RAM, currently available 306MB. (Per taskman). 35 processes, all of which aside from iexplore are using <10MB of RAM.

    * IE takes 15 seconds to open.
    * PS takes a good 10 seconds to open a picture.
    * Higher-bitrate videos are unwatchable because the computer can't decode fast enough.
    * Etc.

It's ridiculous. What can I do about it? Ideas? :x:

    Trojan.
See if there are any strange processes running, then get their name and search Google for a removal tool.
It happened to be several months ago.

run tds3 to check for Trojans
then goto www.blackviper.com and turn off all the crap you don't need
you gain so much by killing all the shit windows has but you never use :bigthumb:

DLing TDS3 now, we'll see how it does. My useless services have been off since 10 minutes after I first built this machine. :hs:

As I expected, no trojans detected. NortonAV runs every night. SpyBot and Adaware detect nothing. So :wtf: This machine used to be blazing fast. Now Iget up and get a drink while loading a program. :(

    Also - Bonzo: :wavey:

Take a large object and beat your computer with it. Rinse. Repeat.

Device manager -> IDE ata/atapi controllers-> Primary IDE Channel -> advanced properties tab-> make sure both transfer modes are on "DMA if availble". The current transfer mode should be DMA not PIO.

If its on PIO, it means that a lot of cpu power is being used to access the HD plus the transfer rate from/to HD is about 10 times slower.

Jaime, maybe we should have the butt sekz sometime. I have my own apartment so you could leave that silly AFB and have butt sekz.

Isn't your primary channel to your HD, not the CD drives? Well set your secondary channels to DMA too I guess.

One of my HD's were on PIO for some reason awhile back and once I switched it back, the HD became way more efficient.

    CCEVTMGR is a norton thing
    CTSVCCDA is a SoundBlaster thing
    EM_EXEC is my mouse driver
WinPatrol watches for unauthorized changes to the registry / IE homepage. None are bad, AFAIK.

Besides, all of these things have been running for almost a year, but the slowdown is only in the last several weeks.
