Had that reading from one of those electronic blood pressure cuffs at the grocery store. This was after a brisk walk. Is my heart going to explode?

Take 5min to breath deeply and relax and see if it goes down. A lot of little things can cause a spike in blood pressure so if it's high it's usually a good idea to wait a bit, take some deep breaths and try again.

If you're on E/C that might also be the culprit. It can raise blood pressure in some people.

what size are your arms? what size is recommended for that cuff? most are 9-13 inches.

i've read 290/50 once on one of those at the drug store.

doubt that thing has been calibrated or checked in the last 3000 years

you're probably fine brosolopithicus .. even though you could've got some SICK meds from the pharmacist if you showed them your results and bent the truth slightly ..... muahaha

This happens to me too. If my docs don't go to a bigger cuff I will usually read high... once they switch it's fine. I'm around 18" or so.

Arms are 15 3/4 inches. Didn't see the recommended size. I will try with my own bp cuff later tonight. Gotta wait for a friend to get off work to check it.

My friend took it. She got 125 over 70 twice. All is well, carry on.

I had some worries about taking EC but I could just as easily die in a car accident so I'll take my chances with a heart attack.

My blood pressure in my left arm is 40-80 higher then my right arm/normal. When I was a kid I wasn't allowed to stick my left arm in those machines, my mom was afraid they wouldn't have a failsafe and somehow cut off my arm. They still sorta freak me out.

    .

those cuffs aren't meant for larger size arms and can give whacked numbers

    Yep.

Whenever I go to my family doc the nurse there knows to get a larger cuff and it's always perfect. When I go to other doc's (pulmonologist, asthma/allergy dude) they take it and it's always high.
Then I go home to take it and it's perfect.
