Dood, your dad's face has fantastic character. I think these were the best of several really nice photos overall.

I hope you won't be offended; this one was calling out to me for some B&W; hope you approve. :hs:

Thanks everyone for the comments, instead of 50 replies I'll respond to everyone in this post :)

twinturboteddy: YES. I love this lens.. it's incredible what can be pulled out of it considering its cost.

    l33tpilot: Thanks man, I appreciate it :)

siniquezu: Nice! Never even thought of that...

pantheR: You can.. I was just in luck with some great lighting at this place.. It wasn't exactly cloudy, but the sun was peeking in and out, which made for a nice smooth light over everyone, but still some contrast (which makes things look even sharper..)

smeghead: Thanks dude.. minus whale, they can be really inexpensive..

JaimeZX: Yeah, my Dad is a perfect character for a prime lens.. Lots of creases and wrinkles in his face, crazy bushy moustache, bushy eyebrows, deep pores... With prime sharpness the detail you can see in his face is incredible.. I really appreciate your comments and the B+W looks great.

Here's a couple shots I took with the Canon 85mm 1.2L when I rented it which impressed me with detail.. These shots are what sold me on buying a prime lens..

Although I do agree that it's silly to compare the 50mm 1.8, and the 85mm 1.2

I love my 50/1.4 but it's not as sharp as I get the feeling it should be. :hsd:

We did a Czech wedding last night. Everything was normal, beside the 'grand march' thing. Wierdest wedding tradition I've seen.

Dude, don't fuck with the grand march. Seriously, the first wedding I went to that didn't have one, kinda freaked me out...I was like, what? No grand march?!!! :run:

because I wanted somewhat smooth interesting bokeh, and I didn't feel like seeing thousands of pentagrams throughout the images LOL..

What's the problem with wide open if it's sharp and has decent bokeh?

with such a small DOF it's very easy to mistake a non-sharp lens with missing the focus.. an inch this way or that and the image is trash :sad2:

not saying that you're missing the focus on your images but i felt my copy was soft too until I got to some decent lighting and nailed the focus every time..

also if you stop up to like f/2.8 or something you can probably increase sharpness by a lot, and if you go up to 4, it will look crystal clear.

i think the boke becomes the subject
could have stopped to f5.6 and had the best of both worlds
    this pic stands out http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2531/3824483069_eb11a6de09_o.jpg

I've messed around with lighting; but I feel like even at f/4.0 sometimes it still seems soft. But I definitely know what you mean about being at f/1.4 or f/1.8 and having to be dead-on. ;)
