A&P My attempt at Nightclub/Dance photos...

Discussion in 'Lifestyle' started by coughlin's law, Apr 26, 2008.

  1. There was an Fashion Show, and a dance party that followed. I'm good friends with the DJ and I shot some photos;

    Equipment and EXIF info:

Sigma 10-20 @ F/4 or F/5.6 (ranged time to time)
    50mm F/1.8
    580EX II (Ranging from +2/3, +1 1/3, to -1/3) (In E-TTL mode)
    ISO (800-1600)
    RAW
Exposure time ran anywhere from 1"3 to 4 (Which was a bitch to hold the camera consistently)

First time with an external flash, I was trying to always bounce it off the ceiling...

By get closer, I meant physically get closer and diffused flash.

Are you trying to get the background lit? Cause I usually just light up my subjects without the background being lit too.

I'm personally not a fan of bouncing flash off the ceiling for night club/dance party type shots. It makes it look like people are partying w/ all the lights on.

Usually i'll use a diffuser but still point it forward at the subject and shoot in Tv w/ the slowest shutter speed i'm comfortable w/. This picks up the ambient light and the camera figures out the amount of flash needed for the subjects. Usually works well for me.

  15. I'll see if I can't borrow my friend's 580EX II next time and try it... this event happens every 3 mos or so...

  16. I might want to get this next... E-TTL bracket...

Try this next time... I tried it and worked great.

Leave your flash on TTL at -2/3rd
Set your camera to shutter priority
Set your shutter speed at 1/30-1/60th
    ISO 800-1000ish
and bounce it to fill... and use a diffuser or a globe.

You'll get a nice fill, nothing too harsh, and you'll get the background color too. Wish I had access to mine to show the effect, but it worked for me. Curious if it'll do the same for you too

That's exactly what I thought as I was looking through the pics.

Cut down on the harshness of your flash and I think you'd be pretty set.

First couple pics are pretty good, but the rest seem like the camera focused nowhere in specific. I don't like club shots where the focus is the people you shot, but you clearly see every detail in the people behind them.
