Stephen Toulouse, the director for policy and enforcement for the Xbox 360's Xbox Live online service, announced via Twitter on December 2 that Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 players who abuse the "javelin missile exploit" will be banned from the entire Xbox Live service. Depending on the severity of the abuse, the ban may last between 24 hours and a few weeks or, in extreme cases, the ban may be permanent.

The Modern Warfare 2 javeline exploit is when players intentially abuse a glitch in the online multiplayer. The player switches to the javeline missile launcher after "cooking" a semtex grenade by holding down the grenade throw button. This locks the player's actions, but once the player dies the javeline missile explodes, killing all enemies within an enormous radius.

Players of the original Call of Duty Modern Warfare frequently complained about the "martyrdom" perk, which dropped a grenade when the player dies. The javeline exploit creates a similar outcome, except the explosion radius is the same size as a javeline missile, which is far larger and more deadly than a grenade.

While the move to ban already has its vocal critics, the Xbox Live terms of use does clearly state that abusing exploits, glitches, cheats, or unauthorized mods will not be tolerated.

According to the Xbox Live terms of use, users are not allowed to "exploit a bug, or make an unauthorized modification, to any software or data to gain unfair advantage in a game, contest, or promotion." Presumably, this means gamers who use the exploit on accident will not be banned, but those who deliberately use the exploit repeatedly to gain an unfair advantage would be subject to a ban.

In an article describing Xbox Live's terms of service and how players get banned, Major Nelson said, "Using a variety of tools and reports, we are able to confidently stand behind the actions we take to create a stronger Xbox Live community."

    Are you fucking retarded?

    1. It's not Microsoft's fault.
    2. You agreed to Microsoft's ToS which states that cheating/glitching in multiplayer games is bannable.
    3. Since when the fuck is cheating fair?

The EULA clearly states the penalties for this. It's nothing new.

How the fuck is it any different from getting banned by VAC or Punkbuster on computers?

    Oh wait, it isn't.

    Don't cheat, problem solved.

I actually appreciate it. They were never this strict in the past.

With 20m (well 19m now) paying customers, they better use their fucking banhammer.

Your entire Xbox isn't banned either. And it's not just like you couldn't make a new XBL account.
