Check the tranny for leaks/noises/etc, oil leaks, frame damage, rust (especially the rear hatch lock area if a hatchback), make sure it pulls hard up until at least 5500 on the stock tach (they are off and that is actually about 5000rpm). Check the dash/interior stuff. Just basic normal used car buying stuff.

5.0's are very, VERY stout cars provided they get their oil changed and it is kept full. Dont be suprised if it burns a *little* oil, most 5.0's do. Make sure it isnt making any weird noises or smoke at all. If the car looks to be modded at all, make sure you check it out even harder. Take more notice of details than you would a stock car. Modded 5.0's are driven HARD, and dont let anyone else tell you different. If they modded it, they drove it hard...its a fact.

ill agree with everything else that was stated above, i have an 88 5.0.....
if you plan on modding this car (major mods, not just little bolt ons) then get a 88 california edition to early model 92 for the MAS + forged pistons.

Just bought a '92 GT here. Pay attention to the radiator core support. Almost all 'stangs I looked at had been hit in this area. Also almost all of them will have the ashtray door broke along with the inside door handle bezels. And the plastic headlights will be faded from UV light. Rust underneith the hatch area is common. Look for butcher jobs on aftermarket radio installs.

Have the seller start it up when it's cold. Watch the tailpipes for smoke.

my cousin has a 1988 5.0, make sure if its an AOD that when its floored it doesnt hold at about 4 grand when it shifts. Make sure the seat supports are not rusted through.

Best friend has a 79 Capri with a 92 drivetrain. 5.0s are very tough.

All good advice given so far.

One other thing is to check the torque boxes. If the torque boxes are cracked/warped, its a good sign that the car has been abused/driven HARD.

Good luck, mustangs are fun as hell to drive :bigthumb:
