I'm looking into buying a Mustang GT with a 5.0L, probably either a late 80's foxbody or a early 90's. I was just wondering when they stopped using carbs and started with fuel injection? Any input would be appreciated.

86 was the last year for a carb, but i would buy anything older than an 89(i think might be 90) so it has mass air and not speed density(better for mods)

89 and newer has mass air. 87-88 is Speed Density.

IIRC, 89-91 were the best years. After they started using mass air, and before they switched to hypereutectic pistons in 92(93?).

Last carbed stang was in '85. '86 had the first year of EFI, but it wasnt as good as the '87-'95 EFI. '87 had Speed density, '88 California Cars had Mass Air, starting in '89 all 5.0 Stangs had Mass Air. Hypereutic pistons began in '93, and are fine as long as you dont go FI.

You can run the hypereutectic pistons with boost and be fine. Detonation will destroy any piston, even forged ones. Hypers just dont stand up to it as well. I cant tell you how many people I know running blowers on stock 93-95 shortblocks that have zero problems.
