I think i've decided on the 717 (found it for $540), now what items are a must have? Obviously memory, memory card reader and tripod but anything else? Also, suggestions for memory? Does it matter if i stick to sony brand sticks?

I've found sony 256mb for $79, sony 512mb for $200, and sony usb reader for $40. Can i at least go cheapo on the usb reader? Can anyone tell me on average, how much normal resolution pictures take up (i've heard around 2.5mb)

Thanks, and if anyone knows any places cheaper, i'm all ears.

And if by all means, you want to persuade me to get the nikon cp 5700, go ahead and try, i've been contemplating between the two of these but chose the sony because i think i'd like to do night shots more.

you don't need the card reader, just use the supplied cable.

256 is more than enough for the 717 if you're not going on long trips

    highest jpeg range frorm 1.5->2.5ish.

BTW I no longer have one so my memory maybe outdated.

    great camera though.

How does the cable work? Does it plug into the camera?

With my current cam i used to have to plug the camera in, and have it turned on to upload the images (via serial port :ugh: ) so i got a card reader which is so much easier.

Also, brand name memory matter? lexan, sandisk, sony etc

Get your memory sticks from buy.com

As for essentials, get the UV lens protector (+ polarizer too if you want). I have a lens hood as well. Spare battery, and a 512MB stick of MS Pro from Sandisk. Sandisk has been cheaper than Lexar lately. You can fit 194 full res. images on the 512MB.

I got my spare battery from here:

    I have a Sunpak 9001UT tripod, only like $35 from B&H Photo.
I also have the Hoya HMC UV lens protector, it was only $18 at the time of purchase when I got my F717 back in September. But I am upgrading to the Hoya UV + Polarizer lens here shortly.

I got my 717 at Circuit City about a month ago :)

Anyway, the first thing I bought was a bundle that consisted of a case, extra battery, and neutral density filter kit (comes with a multicoated protector).

My next purchase was filters. Went to photofilter.net and ordered a Hoya Pro 1 UV filter and a Hoya multicoated circular polarizer.

Dished out the money for a Sony lens hood last week at buy.com.

    Accessories get pretty expensive :hs:

best price on price on Pricegrabber for the bundle is here.

How does the supplied cord work with memory transfer. Do you plug the cord into cam, then transfer from there/

An external Flash that is adjustable is really nice. The factory flash is kinda sucky.
