My cousin and I were debating last night about how achieve muscle mass through LIFTING (disregard nutrition). My cousin says that you need to lift heavy weights with low reps to achieve muscles. But I tell him that I do not want to get "Big", I want an almost lean and cut look (my goal is marine type body). So I do high reps so that I will have cuts and hoping that my muscles will get bigger. He further tells me that is his point, "you have to have muscles in order to form them." Basically build my muscles mass up, then form them.

Is he right? I am thinking your muscle mass will go up if you continue to lift high reps and steadily increase the weights.

I don't know if I am making any sense, so let me know. I just wanted a second opinion. Thanks.

    General rule of thumb is:

    1-4 Strength
    4-7 Strength/Size
    8-12 Size

But then again, you will get stronger/gain muscle if you do ANY combination of those. Also, different bodyparts and excerises require different ammounts of reps/sets. For example, its usually a good ideal to keep olympic lifts/deadlifts low rep becuase form deteriorates quickly. On the other hand, a lot of people saw a vast improvement in arm size when they started hitting their arms with high volume (lots of reps)....

At the end of the day, just go and work out. If you are still concerned, then find a specific routine and follow it. Check out Pur's stickey at the top, for example.

It doesn't matter how many reps you do as long as you 'ave your fish n rice cakes.

Reps are a matter of preferance.

If you progress from 3 sets of 10 of 135 on the bench to 3 sets of 10 reps of 315, your gonna be bigger. Same shit's gonna happen if you progress from 8 sets of singles with 200 lbs to doing singles with 450..you're gonna get bigger. The key thing is weight progression.

What you want to do is cut. Higher reps dont give you that.
