I saw it a couple of months ago as well and asked for help on this board and no one seemed to know what the movie really was. Although the lesbian scene was

David Lynch has lost his mind thanks to years of drug abuse. There is no explanation for that movie.

basically... all the movie until you see the cracked out blonde chick on the couch, is a dream. she makes up stories in her mind to explain why she feels scorned by a lover, as well as why she failed to get the part in the movie. She's aspiring to be an actress and the blonde chick from the beginning of the movie is a representation of what she thinks she is. Kinda get it? Theres a lot that i can't answer to...

like the cowboy. I believe mulholland drive was a pitch for a series show on tv, wherein the cowboy would have more and more of a role as time went on. Then, it was cut down and lynch decided to just make it a movie; many people speculate that there was some stuff that escaped the cutting floor but yet should have due to lack of total relevance in the movie. I feel the movie was ok once you realize what it was SUPPOSED to be.

The silent opera was the tightest part in my opinion.. moreso than the lesbian scene (which was downright cool, but i can watch better porn, no?)

Like... the reason the whole mobster thing was there is just to emphasize some unknown and unarguable reason why she didn't get the part in the movie (in reality)... she hates the adam guy and hence the reason you see his life suck (wife cheating on him, etc)

    its really confusing.

hey i did a little lookin around and found the site where i went after seeing the movie.

    http://www.franksreelreviews.com/reviews/mdexplain.htm

check that out. This movie is cool, but it really is a little too hard to understand. Even if you're some sort of genius, you'd never get all that on your own. Seriously.

Another thing - people either loved this movie or hated it, it seems. i was one of the few (no im not bragging about my uniqueness) that was just kinda... hmm. I give it a B? As in, it was cool. But not a must-see.

I think that is the reasoning alot of smart people have come up with; it fits the movie and "sorta" works... but David Lynch is really just plain fucking batty. That said, there are some fucking awesome parts in that movie, like the opera.

No, of course not - i honestly think at least the basic
"woman scorned, dreams weird things to justify" idea is correct.

EDIT - in reference to ghetto91accord.

Mulholland Drive was originally intended to be a show on ABC (same network who gave him the green light on Twin Peaks). However, they rejected the pilot. Lynch took the pilot, added footage, and made it into the movie. The actresses didn't know how he was using their new scenes (they were just as confused as you are).

Funny that ABC rejected Lynch, and then accepted that pos Ben Affleck Twin Peaks rip off... and that show failed. Why accept a Lynch knock off when you could have Lynch himself.

A few problems I had with that view.

In the final scene where she dies it cuts to her first ariving in Hollywood kind of like that begins when she dies.... Maybe a reincarnation alternate universe kind of thing...

also the blue box and the fucked up guy whos "causeing all this".... ya I dont know....

It just being her dream feels incomplete.

I loved it, but I like Lynch. If you liked this, see "Twin Peaks" & "Blue Velvet."

Strange but wonderful twists and mood.
