Seriously, I havent been more impressed, amused, interested in any other character I have come across in the world of anime.

Mugen is the epitome of coolness. He's always calm and collected and shows a dont give a shit attitude towards everything while still managing to get by just fine.

He always has a sense of humour in any situation even if hes losing his cool and at the end of the series is when he truely shines by risking his life to save a certain somebody.

The only other character i could size him up with is Spike from Cowboy Bebop.
Actually you could almost say they are the same person (personality) except one weilds a sword the other a gun.

No other anime character makes a better hero in my opinion.
If you disagree please post who you think is better and why.

Which brings me to my next point.

Samurai Champloo has to be one of the top anime series available. It easily ranks up there with Cowboy Bebop imo. (same director and voice actor(s) used too)

Its so well balanced, in regards to storytelling, action, adventure, humour, character development, episodic content, length, etc.
Anybody who's thoroughly watched through this anime would have to agree.

Same producer/director (I Think) that created Cowboy Bebop also worked on Samurai Champloo thus the similarities between Mugen and Spike.

With that said, it really depends on the type of protagonist you like. I personally don't find the "cool, don't give a shit attitude" all that important in a protagonist. I usually look for major character development and well-rounded personality with multiple facets. Mugen didn't really chance nor did he show anything but the "cool, don't give a shit attitude" so he's not high on my list. :)

mugen is just your basic badass.

vash is more interesting, he was badass but had the whole haunted past conflict thing going.

i <3 samurai champloo and it's up there in recent animes.

I liked mugen for the fact that he was something different from every other cookie cutter anime protag, I also thought it was really cool that they used a lot of the same voice actors in both the english and japanese versions of Bebop and Champloo.

not rly.. he almot got his ass kicked by a freaking blind woman

hiko seijuro > * samurai anime characters
    [IMG]

pretty much all the traits you like about mugen can be applied to him but hiko is 100x better in each trait...

and in that case i dont he has ever had to risk his life except voluntarily when he was teaching the succession technique... pretty much everytime he fights its cuz he has nothing better to do and he doesnt even try and and is probably also drunk... and like every woman wants to sleep with him.. most women are disgusted by mugen

    typical mugen fight...
1 - mugen dances around like a breakdancing monkey
2 - battle goes back and forth for a few rounds
3 - mugen gets heavily damaged but eventaully pulls through either by sheer luck or some other bullshit
4 - mugen recovers and then wastes his money gambling and paying prostitutes to hang out with him

    typical hiko fight...
1 - hiko ponders whether its a waste of his time and effort to even draw his sword
2 - enemy attacks and hiko takes out about 10-20 warriors in one stroke
3 - hiko fucks up the enemy so bad that they explode into a cloud of blood vapors on contact
4 - hiko chugs sake from his jug and goes home

    Mugen fights are more realistic.
While I havent seen this other anime, this hiko character does sound overexaggerated.
Plus mugen is not negative as you say, he spends most of the money he collects on food or travel and I think it was only once in the whole series mugen actually got with a prostitute.

His breakdance fighting style is wicked and almost all the fights he wins easily.
There were only 2 or 3 times he got severely hurt also counting the last few episodes near the end.
He's funny and witty too which makes him a better character overall.

you are using "realism" as an argument in an anime :ugh2:

and since you dont even have any knowledge of the other anime while i have seen both... you are already biased and therfore flawed

and for god sakes you have "ssj" in your username.... you already lose all credibility in all anime related debates

i have to agree vash/mugen are extremely bad ass
i really love wolfwood too, maybe more. His character is just a paradox in itself and he is always fucking badass.

thats at the begining of the first OVA

OVA is where you go if you are looking for some crazy bloody kenshin battles
