I needed a cheep little coffeetable book for next weekend, so though I'd try Mpix out.

Software was decent, its no InDesign but better than others I've used.

Uploaded it thursday afternoon, requested next day shipping (figuring it would take a few days to print/bind) and needed it by the following thursday. It was printed and bound and packed thursday and was on my door on friday afternoon. Amazing turnaround time. Thought I might even order a fwe more if that was teh case.

    But then I opened it . . .

Pretty basic, no cover options other than like 2 colors, whatever.

Color wasn't even close. Extremely flat and dull, major color shifts

what the image was suppose to be

they do allow panos, but between the gutter and the fact is doesn't lay flat makes it pretty useless

paper was awful. extremely thin and wavey, looked like normal paper had gone through a ink jet printer when it gets that thick wet feel.

    I think it was $33 + 9 shipping, so $42 wasted :hsd:

amazing turnaround time, decent software, very disappointed in the quality, not really useable to me for anything

That sucks dude. That book pretty much looks like shit. FWIW, I have about the same experience using Blurb: http://www.blurb.com so I wouldn't recommend them either.

The only decent self publish book I've seen yet is Asukabook, but it's expensive and slow to get them. :hsd:

You guys need to look into Shared Ink. They are much cheaper than Asuka and the quality is wonderful, one of the absolute best print qualities I've seen. I've used them for client pieces several times and been very happy. You just lay it out in Photoshop or InDesign, no special software and they completely color manage as well.

Turn around isnt as quick as the bigger guys, but not as slow as Asuka either.

www.sharedink.com They have a special photographers program that allows you to print full bleed, have options such as real leather covers with foil stamping and will print without ANY branding on the book saying where it came from, which is great for pro use. If you have a logo, they can even put that in the place of their branding.

Contact me at [email protected] and I'll send you an invite for the photographers program. Its not visible on the public site.

Fuck that. I don't care if they send it out and it looks perfect the second time. The fact that they have no QC at all and let it ship out in the first place is ridiculous.

though the 2nd came today and its much better, still useable but 5 days too late :wtc:

but the fact they sent that and the only excuse was they were having problems with that paper (that they offer without any cautions) is ridiculous. Definetly will be looking elsewhere next time.

what do you think about their true black and white prints? They are the only place I have found to make b&ws without a color cast
