While looking for the cactus triggers, I came across this. I wanted to get a 285 hv as a second flash anyways, but I dont know of the quality of the rest of the stuff in the kit.

    Includes:
    1 - Vivitar 285HV Shoe Mount Flash
    1 - 8ft. Air Cushioned Light Stand
1 - Cactus V2s Wireless Radio Slave set (Transmitter and Receiver)
    1 - Westcott 43” Compact Umbrella - Soft Silver
1 - Rosco Pro Color Correction Gel Pack
1 - DIY Grid, Barndoor, Snoot kit
    1 - CTA Ni-MH 2700mAh AA 4-pack Battery w/Rapid Charger
    1 - Bongo Elastic Ties (10 pack)
    1 - Umbrella Swivel
    1 - Nano Gaffer Tape roll 1"x8yds

    PRICE: $219

I'll also have to get a second receiver for my current flash, I can mount that to my current tripod, should I get a second umbrella for it?

and how do rapid chargers effect battery life vs one that takes like 6 hours (my current one)?

Should I just piece together the kit myself? Remember, Im noob on a limited budget (but I dont mind eating ramen for a while if I need to spend more on stuff to avoid getting junk ;) ), and I'm still learning a lot.

I've been debating back and forth on the kit... If you go through and take unnecessary items out, it doesn't wind up being too much cheaper, but possibly enough to cover shipping :dunno:

im thinking indoor/outdoor, but, im not really sure how easy it will be to transport outdoor. So I might just end up using the flash outside, and the rest of it for inside.

honestly, do you like the kit? whats good, and whats bad about it? why are you looking to get rid of it? and whats your price?

As far as stands go, how well does off camera flash work when it is directly on the ground?

Im just thinking I could rig up a little stand tomorrow at work, with a thread for the flash.

the other one, im not concerned with a flash mounted on my tripod (especially if im not using an umbrella, I made a nice little cardboard softbox im going to have to grab some nice sheer white fabric from work too, I tried using just printer paper, but I think its a little to heavy, and doesn't let enough light through), I havent had a close call yet with it with my camera mounted to it, even in high wind, and I can always clip my bag to it if im in a high really wind situation

I have the strobist kit (SN2) and it's good quality except that I broke my umbrella swivel because I overtightened the male stud.

personally, i've got the white wescott umbrella that has the black cover. i went with it so i can use it as either a shoot through or bounce. :dunno: i've never used the silver one, but i've only used mine in a bounce setup once, i much prefer shoot through.

easy fix.. if you're on grass, a tent spike works great. If you're on concrete, some sandbags, or heavy blocks work as well.

i got the stand, swivel, umbrella, and a 285hv from my mom for christmas last year, plus a tamron 28-75. :coold: except that the reason she had all the money to spend on us at christmas was cause my dad passed away :hsd:
