I agree about Fight Club. I think even Chuck P. has said the movie is better than his book.

Anyone else find this to be true? For me the only way a movie is better than the book is if I see the movie before the book.
    (This isn't always true.)

    1) Fight Club
    2) Lathe of Heaven
    3) Rum Punch, Get Shorty, Elmore Leonard movies for me are better than his books.

I dont think any movie I have ever seen is better than the book. But if I read the book prior to the movie then I hate the movie but if I watch the movie first then the movie isnt as bad.

Lots of times I think movies and books can enhance one's appreciation of each other. A great exmple of this to me is Lord of the Rings. Yes, the movies didn't follow the book exactly, but it was still great to see how a bunch of people could come together and put together a pretty darn good representation.

So then, I can go back and reread the book, and see some of the scenes from the movies that fit the book exactly. Others, I can read the book, and think about how I would have done that scene differently.

Plus, I wouldnt be surprised if a lot of people went and read the book after seeing the movies. Getting people interested in literature isn't that much of a bad thing, in my opinion.

I could probably say the same about the Harry Potter movies...those books and movies probably did a lot to get a bunch of kids interested in reading.

The Harry Potter movies are absolutely terrible if you have read the books.

I tried to read LOTR after seeing the movies and I couldnt do it. I will probably do it eventually. I wish I would of read it before seeing the movies.

I even knew a ton of teens and adults and even older people(like my dad :hs: ) who got into the books after the first movie.

then they became hooked, read all the books and have seen each movie a dozen times.

get carter (the original). michael caine was jack carter in that movie. all the elements of the book were perfectly played out on screen.

Forrest Gump. That book was fucking ridiculous. He was a mathematical savant and became an astronaut that crashed back to earth on a remote island or deep jungle somewhere with his space monkey and a crazy lesbian co-astronaut. There was a bunch of other dumb shit I can't remember.

Thats questionable. The books and movies arent even close. All that is similiar is the characters names. Different story completely. I dont know which I like better though.

Clockwork Orange! (Inspired by an AV.) The dialect was too hard to understand when you were reading the novel. The screen images and music made the film much more powerful.
So powerful that the movie was banned in the UK by its own director and the book wasn't.

Completely agreed. I love the books to much to enjoy these movies.

The Princess Bride is another example..the movie and the book are very different, but both VERY good.

Yes! I've tried to explain to friends how terrible the book was, and the movie is one of my favorites.

Also, Catch Me If You Can, while the true story, was just not as entertaining as the movie

I concur with the statements about Potter. Books simply have a much more complete story [as they should]. But that's not to say that I don't like the movies.

"Battle Royale" made a better movie than book, imo.

I'll go there: Howl's Moving Castle. Sure I watched the movie first, but the director+animator had a much better visual sense than the reader (me) and could probably write a comparable original screenplay (more entertaining ending)

    YES.
I read the first book after seeing the movies and wasn't impressed at all.
