Any of you participate in mountain biking? Now, living in IL, I can't really "mountain" bike, but we do have a few decent trails, but I've never really done it. I ride my bike around the city, and take my mountain bike when I go rock climbing to dick around, but never actually done real biking.

I am just looking for another new way to be outside and be active in nature, and this seems a perfect addition to rock climbing.

I checked online and found some trails that look like fun within decent distance.. and once I get the hang of it I can start to travel a bit more to trails in Michigan, Wisconsin, Kentucky, etc...
Is there anything specific I need to know, or I do I just find a trail online and have at it? Are there silent rules or biking manners I should know about?

If you are on a horse trail, horses have the right of way.

    No, fuck that.

Horses yield to me when I roll out shirtless on my Trek.

As fast as 30" quads peddling a 21 speed bike. I don't think so Chuck.

    I've gone once w y1997. It sucked.
    I definitely prefer road :dunno:

Then again, I didn't have clips, I didn't have clipless pedals, and I was riding an abandoned bike my dad "borrowed" from campus.

Get a good bike. I just got into it myself this summer. I'm palling to do a few trips up north with some buddies.

Everytime I come across horses on the trails their owners usually pull them to the side and yield to us because the horses get skiddish and want to buck the old farts off... It's always kind of :mamoru:

I've got a Trek 820 21-speed (3x7) with aftermarket peddles. It's not a super nice bike, but it is a decent mountain bike that ran like $450 a few years ago. I think it would be sufficient for what I want/need. I also have a new helmet for MB'ing I just bought.

Going to the northern MI dunes this summer with a couple buddies to do some MB'ing actually.
