Except for hardcore fitness fanatics, I don't see any reason to join a gym. If you just wanna get in a little better shape or put on a little muscle, then it seems to me investing in a few free weights, some miscellaneous cheap excercise equipment and a different diet is a much better option.

I know it's a windfall for the fitness industry that everyone thinks fit = joining a gym, but I really don't see why that's necessary unless you're a body builder or fitness fanatic. I think it's just more likely to make people fail because it's a pain in the ass to find time to go to the gym, so most people will eventually stop going.

Thats the reason why gyms make so much money.

Its actually more that people seem to have the mentality that if they pay money, they will get what they want. In this case, if they pay for a gym membership they think they will magically look like a hotty all of a sudden. America likes to pay money to make problems go away.

A lot of people want to run on good treadmills or other commercial cardio equipment. That shit alone is more expensive than a couple years of gym memberships.

I like using the power rack. Some other people like dumbbells. Others like the weight machines. A gym is a broker for those who can't afford the equipment on their own but would rather pay a fraction of the cost to use it on occasion.

I don't see your point basically

A cheap exercise bike > paying to go to the gym for cardio machines.

I'm talking about for most people, which doesn't include hardcore fanatics who need a specific machine or those who are ultrapicky. Besides, how much more likely are you to use a bike if it's 10 feet away in your house as opposed to at the gym?

If you're not a ultra serious about fitness, then why use machines instead of free weights? Most things you can do on a machine, you can do with free weights, granted, not as well, sometimes, but unless you're a body builder, who cares?

Some people are ignorant and think free weights are the devil so they rather use machines.

Maybe because some of us dont have room for a rack, bench and an enough plates/weights to cover all the bases?

Well, apparently millions of Americans express their disagreement with you every day by attending a gym

Yea ok i agree with that... the flakes subsidize those who DO go.

Consider the fact that it costs the gym a lot more to have people use cardio equipment and machines than it does to use dumbbells. Free-weight users have to subsidize the fat ladies who break equipment
