There are many lists made of the best movies ever, but what about most influential? (keep in mind 'influential' does not = good, neccessarily). Let's make a list:

1927: 'Jazz Singer' wasn't first sound film, but started sound revolution in hollywood.

1915: 'Birth of a Nation' possibly most influential movie ever, first epic blockbuster and set the standard for feature film length and story structure

1934: 'It Happened one night' first madcap comedy

1960s: the New Wave movement in france with movies like Breathless, they tore down hollywood conventions

1977: star wars brings in the age of the modern blockbuster

1996: 'Scream' brings back horros, slasher, teen drama

    1998: 'Matrix' influences action forever

1994: 'pulp fiction' brings in indie filmmaking, influences crime films forever

1992: 'T2' starts special effects revolution

    what else?

Pulp fictions effect on film had nothing to do with being indie. The film has an 8 million dollar budget and mainstream cast, it wasn't indie. And really, the crime wasn't that big of a deal either. What Pulp fiction did that was so revolutionary was it presented a completely new way of telling a story via movie, and broke the 'Act1/Act2/Act3' structure as it stood in pre-pulp 1994. There was no defined beginning, middle or end really, each little segment had its own beginnings, middles and ends that tied into the others, it was a masterpiece Ensemble. And it wasn't the first either. See Robert Altman films.

Large scale CGI yes. Thought you might argue that The Abyss was the first major film to use CGI in any realistic way.
