Im looking into building a new computer... and I need some CPU advice. What is the most effective CPU above 2.6 GHZ without costing me a ton of money.... high price is ok.... but not a thousand ;)

Cost effective? Probably the Barton 2500+. You can OC it easily to 3200+ speeds. All for 80 retail

An amd 3200, unfortunately isn't 3.2 Ghz. Not sure if it's still there, but newegg.com had P4 3.0C's for $180...they are overclockable to 3.6Ghz.

I had mine running stable at 2.21 GHz, but I had to take it down a notch (to 2.19) to run the UT2004 demo.

If your building a new system to have for a while, consider the Athlon64+ chips (3000+, 3200+, 3400+).. A bit more expensive for the CPU, but probably worth it down the road.

The mobile xp 2500s with barton cores are hitting 2.7Ghz and they're $100 from newegg, pretty damn good IMO

And gigahertz, unfortunately, don't really mean anything. An AMD 3200+ "runs" as fast as an Intel 3.2, despite the fact that its clock speed is only 2.something GHz. It's all a matter of architechture.
