They seem to be available fairly cheap and the ammo appears to be fairly inexpensive as well. Worth the time? Any other surplus rifles to consider? Any worthwhile differences between the different versions/receivers? Best place to buy?

pick one up at aimsurplus and get a hex reciever most of them are ex dragoon ones and in great shape. Other c&r ones to consider are k31 swiss and mausers you can get a vz 24 at a fairly decent prcie

    found 1 for $70 and 1 for $110
both are in decent shape, i wouldn't do anything other than mess around with either of them at the range, for the $ they are fun cheap pieces of history

Sounds good. I am debating on waiting for a gun show as there are always a few tables with them or going through a local dealer for the transfer. The part that irks me is that my area fucking blows and the cheapest guy charges $38 for a transfer which is ridiculous on a rifle that is only $90

The best/worst thing about a Mosin is that first shot you fire out of it. Will it explode? Will the bolt seize?

    they're decent enough guns.

as long as someone has realistic expectations. it is a weapon that's been stored for a billion years and costs less than $100 lol, it's not a precision tactical weapon

but yeah, i dig my mosins and corrosive ammo :)

Mosins are a blast, Brinkman has one and I love shooting it. PROTIP : look into what it costs you to get a C&R license (IIRC it's $30 and a couple month wait), because pretty much ONE FFL transfer fee on a Mosin will pay for itself if you get teh C&R instead.

I think there are enough Mosins to go around  IIRC that's why they cost less than a good bottle of booze

Yeah I am going to be starting the paperwork for my C&R but I found a guy who will do a transfer for $25 locally so I'm just going to grab one now to satisfy my gun lust at the moment. I hate waiting...

I think M44's look :greddy:. Of the carbines I'd pick the M38, but not over a 91/30.

IMO its worth it to pay a little more for a nice mosin with a genuinely good bore. Not good for a mosin, but actually good.
