so as i'm sitting here looking at different stuff i get the urge to buy an $80 nagant and put a synthetic stock, bipod, and scope on it. how good/reliable/accurate of a medium distance/hunting gun would this make?

    something like this

From what I understand, it's kind of a crap shoot whether the gun will shoot straight past 100 yd, but the round is certainly big enough to hunt with. Does anyone make replacement barrels for these?

Not yet, but I have been prodding around for someone to do so, with the same exterior poorly tooled exterior, but still have a match grade barrel. I had a company in Montana ready to start cutting them, then Obama got elected, and they dropped doing any custom unusual barrels.

However you CAN still find POLISH mosins that are mint and unfired, that might be a good source to convert. I bet one of these would shoot better than most worn out 91/30s.

buy one from aimsurplus the bores on their are in great shape but I think that stock is supposed to be used on a m44 or you'll have to cut the barrel down on a 91/30. I don't think that turning the bolt down is cheap either but you can mount the scope on the original sight and keep the in the straight position.

Yep, kinda an expensive/ass backwards way to get some designer lighting in a room, unless you are partial to that style.

I heard IKEA is having a sale......

buy a not milsurp hunting rifle for another 200$ (less than you'd end up spending on replacement stock, turning the handle down, scope mount, ect) and not wonder if its going to hit a barn at 100yards.

why try a build starting with a huge question mark?

a mosin is fun to have just to have for history sake (since they're cheap :) ) but to try to turn it into a hunting rifle, not worth the hassle.

you can drop a bunch of money on mods for a mosin and still end up with a lamp and it wouldn't be as neat of a lamp with a new stock etc :)

Well, NON russian mosins tend to actually be pretty decent in terms of quality. Also, they weren't dealing with ~70 YEARS of corrosion and lack of care for their rifles.

Also, most mosin's these days are war-time production models, which aren't very high quality.

I actually started doing this a year or so ago. Bought a synth stock for my M38. Got a bent bolt, just waiting on a scope mount. It kind of got put on hold due to a lack of motivation. I'll finish it sooner or later.

I didn't do it to build a tack driver or even to hunt with. I honestly just wanted to see what it would do. I'm expecting at least a 2 MOA rifle at 100, which to me would be a success. My M38 always was a good shooter though. I hand picked it from a shitload of them at J&G in Prescott. We'll see some day if that was worth the time.

Oh and by the way, the hardest fucking part is getting the sights off. 60 years of being on there on top of all the shit that's been slathered on since they're born makes for a pain in the ass. That was a bad day...

As long as you get one with a nice bore and a tight muzzle theres no reason it wont shoot straight. There are a lot of worn out rifles out there though.

Because they are more than accurate enough to do their intended job.

I would have figured I'd come in here and find lamp talk. I shoot mine open sights with great results, I've re-worked the trigger a bit but not much else.

Find an ex-sniper with a good bore. They were tested from the factory.

Find a Finn M39 with a ratty stock and a B-barrel (Belgian). The Finn trigger is better anyway.

if you're gonna do it make sure you are able to inspect the bore first.

I have 2 of the cheap ass Mosin's and i like em in terms of my collection but after shooting them they're pretty much just for show.

to be fair mine were the cheap ass shit rifles

42 Ish, fully polished trigger and sear, completely de-cosmolined, re-greased, perfect bore, ATI stock (pillar bedded and barrel floated), UTG bipod, no-name mount (they suck but i loctited the shit outta it) and NC-Star EER scope.

Shoots pretty good, but the shitty ass scope mount has me thinking of going back to irons.
