1945 Izhevsk M44, probably the most common Mosin Nagant around but a hard rifle to beat for $80 IMO. I keep thinking about getting a muzzle brake for it, anyone tried one yet?

I have one.. and a buddy does too.
I shot his and it almost killed me, litterally, when the bolt rails had been worn smooth part of the gun exploded.

needless to say, mine is for sale

good replies guys really diggin it....quick question....the mosin is (to this point) the rifle w/ the most recoil ive experienced so far....ive also shot my gf's brothers winchester .30-30 that felt somewhat similar....would u say the mosin recoils more like a 30-06 or a .308?

Has anyone ordered a mosin from j&g or inter ordnance? and what actual quality was the gun compared to what they stated it would be?

where did you guys get your mosins from? Im thinking about ordering a wwii 91/30 from inter ordnance for $64 and they claim it to be in excelent shape but I dont know as far as the bore is concerned. Im looking for a decently priced mosin with a good stock good bluing and a nice bore

I picked mine up at JG because they are in my state. I didn't get the M44, I got a M38 but the bore is excellent. I went to 3 different big 5's and all of those M44's had some form of defect like pitting in bore or shitty stocks. I put an ATI stock on mine and planned on that before I even bought it, so the stock wasn't that important to me. Even still my stock is above average. I did kind of get to hand pick mine though. They didn't bring out every M38 they had, but he brought a few so i could see which one I liked. Again, the only thing I cared about was the bore, and all of them were pretty shiny. YMMV.

Got mine from Big 5 on sale, like itchiban said though all the ones they had were pretty much junk which was odd because I had picked out the one I wanted the day before the sale to make sure it was decent and the next morning it was missing. Sure enough as soon as the sale ended it was back up on the shelf so I bought it... and used the raincheck I picked up for the sale price.

7.62 x 54r is a really big round. It is bigger than a .308 IIRC. But I am sure the metal buttpad had something to do with it also.

anyone know if they sell hunting ammunition for the Mosin or Mauser in 7.62x54R or 8mm respectively? thinking of getting a cheap one to use as a brush gun, or are they too heavy for that?

The Russian 7N1 stuff is match grade non AP. Very nice accurate stuff.
    7N14 is the AP version.
I use the standard Wolf stuff for goofing around but the Match Grade ammo when it's for long range shooting.
