I have the D80 and the 18-70 kit lens. I want the 50mm, both because it's cheap, looks to be useful, and as well gets nothing but praise. But, I also want a longer lens, at least 300mm. There's this:

    (Nikon 70-300mm G F4-5.6, $199)

199 seems pretty goddamn cheap for this lens, and while I want the range, I don't want a piece of shit either. What's the deal with this lens? Is it any good? Is there a Sigma/Tamron/other 3rd party that makes a similar lens that's better or cheaper?

It's alright. Not all that great. I mean at 300mm it looks pretty crappy.

for like 500 you could get a used nikon 80-200 f/2.8 and it would be WORLDS of difference.

they have at least 4 versions of this lens and they all increase in price:

    $199 (cheap, not worth it)
$249 (better glass, but still too cheap)
    $329 (ED glass, much better)
$400-500 (VR version, ED glass, not so bad)

I have the $329, or so, version and it takes good shots but I get the purple fringing every now and then.

Yeah, but I don't have 900 dollars to spend on a lens, and I also want more than 200mm.

The 329 sounds much better, though.

The G is okay for a cheap lens if you have lots of light available.

How do you know? Have you ever used an 80-200 f/2.8? There is a reason why 99.9 percent of pro photographers use a 70-200 f/2.8, not 70-300 f/4.5-5.6 lens.

With 900 you could get a NICE telephoto lens.

"Better than you'd expect for the price."

seriously, Thom Hogan makes probably the best reviews on Nikon stuff.. And he doesn't get sponsored or even free equipment.

There is the part comparing different models:

Um.... note that with the VR version, you are losing half a stop on the wide end. May not make a difference in terms of camera shake with the VR, but it will affect depth of field and shutter speed (motion blur).

Why not look at the Sigma 70-300 DG with the macro feature n teh 200-300mm range. I have one and like it alot. And it sells most places for $199US.

There was one forsale on www.nikoncafe.com this week. Dont know if its still there or not.

I have the cheap 70-300mm. It was a gift and so far I havent really had too many complaints. For the price, it's a decent lens and I prob. wouldve bought it myself if I hadn't gotten it (I'm a student, I dont have the $$ for the 70-200 f/2.8 VR YET). Under low light you're fucked but during the day, it gets the job done:
