So I went back today and took some more pictures. I'm trying to take pictures every day so I can get better because I love this. I tried the Shutter Speed = ((Focal Length) / 1.5) and tried to get as close as possible to a decent shutter, but because my lens is only 3.5-5.6, I can't get the aperture low enough. I need to start saving for a new lens. I'm using a high ISO because it was relatively dark for some shots. Therefore I've got some noise in most of the pictures.

    1) Snapshot

    2) Playing with flashlight trails.

    3) Late night bridge (I know, the water area sucks. I need a better night with less wake)

    4) Some noise noticeable
    [IMG]

    5) Nots of noise, but what do you think about the composition? I liked the idea of the archway and the arch of the bridge together.

they look soft, and I'm not really feeling your style.

I see what you were going after on the last one, and i think I could like it.

I don't think I really have a style right now. I'm still working on developing one. I'm taking more and more pictures to work on everything.

I still have no idea if you're being sarcastic or genuine. We used LED flashlights

I'm not being sarcastic. I've never done the LED thing either.

What kind of LED flash light? the real small ones? Cause I have a really really big LED one :hs:.

Why are you questioning me? :o

Sorry, I don't mean to be an ass. When it comes to the internet and OT, it's hard to tell when people are being serious or sarcastic.

We used some of the wind up LED flashlights, so more small ones. You can see a pattern with the lines too because they were running with them in their hands and they moved them in the same motion.

First of all, I think 80% people that post in OT MAIN, have some serious issues. I try and avoid MAIN, but OTAP moves wayy too slow. Although, for the most part when I'm in OTAP, I take it more seriously.

The LED thing IS kinda 'played out', but since I haven't tried it... I am still curious.

I agree that it's played out. We were exploring the subway and it has no light at all. We had a few LED flashlights and a halogen flashlight we were using for light, and I just thought I'd experiment.

when you do long exposures like the second pic, its not really necessary to have such high ISO. Most people just use 100-200 ISO and get away w/ it just fine.

For something like that, since it was dark, would ISO 400 be a bit more appropriate? I usually use 100 or so in daylight.

you're letting so much light in, I don't see why even lower ISO would be a problem. I'm no expert in long exposure photography... but when I went camping w/ my buddy last time, we did this picture at 1 AM. 200 ISO (where the D300 starts), 20 second exposure. Came out decent IMO, and you can even see him moving around behind there since it was such a long exposure setting.

Plus, he was drunk and needed a little more time to spell his name out w/ the little butane lamp we had burning.

I'll definitely try it next time to see how it comes out. It definitely makes the trail pop

    D300 doesn't have ISO 100?

are you using autofocus or manual focus?

Your pictures seem ultra soft, I have the 28-135 that i use as an "i dont give a shit lens" typically a 50mm or a 70-200 is mounted, but.... its never been THAT bad.

If AF use ONE af point, if MF, maybe adjust your diopter some more someting seems very off.

Here is another thing that OT doesn't always agree with...

If you can use a higher ISO and have a noisier shot but have it in focus - DO IT!

Yeah I think you must be using MF instead of AF.

I'm using AF. Generally I only use one AF point.

Yeah that might not be the best - play around with other options (I'm not sure what your camera offers)

it does, but you have to go to "LO.1" rather than actual 100 ISO.

When doing long exposures on digital you should always shoot at the lowest ISO possible.

When using film I don't think it really matters.
