A discussion about this has kind of started in the web ring thread and I think its a good time to start a new thread on this.

Who is interested in seeing another coding project?

Should it be a web project or something desktop related?

Should it alternate between the two?

How did the web ring format work out? Stickies and posts helpful? Was there enough info?

How many like the topcoder.com format?

What are some ideas for project #2?

I'd love to participate this time around :big grin:

Desktop would be cool, but on the other hand, web stuff is safe and allows a more broad breed of programmers to participate.

I'm not sure if the amount of time versus everyone's coding experience would make for an effective/fun/interesting competition in the desktop/console application arena. I could be very wrong though and this is where anyone who wants to do this should jump in.

With web app development, I think it allows for a broad level of coding experience and hopefully more folks would be willing to participate and have fun with this. From where I sit, I could probably toss together a desktop app, but I'd probably fall back on my limited VB skills. I don't think I would find that an enjoyable experience (the amount of time available to become semi-proficient with VB + time for other projects = not much time to sleep).

    I had thought about registering "topwebcoder.com" :)

    cool domain name :)

I agree. Stick to web stuff. It would allow a lot of the more graphical-oriented peeps to participate as well. :)

The idea of having web based applications is so anyone can use ANY language. So if you want to do ASP, then thats cool. I bet with enough time, CyberBullets will be doing Assembler based CGI apps real soon. :)

I might be in for something, but it'd have to be non-Windows-specific or web, and it'd probably have to be at a not-so-busy time, since right now I really don't have time to do much coding.

    Loebner Prize anyone?

    http://www.loebner.net/Prizef/loebner-prize.html

I've been following this off and on since '96.

I think what makes it interesting is it pulls from a couple different disciplines such as: computer science (of course), English, psychology...

    Team OT?

Hmm... maybe we should start the 2nd project with something a little easier.
