So I finally got my first handgun yesterday. NIB Sig 226R in 9mm:wiggle: . Love it! No pics cuz I'm lazy and you all know what they look like.

Anyhoo, today I take it to the gun range where I bought it too shoot it for the first time. The gun was unloaded, in the LOCKED Sig case, and I had loaded both mags which were also inside the case. Well before I can go onto the range, they want to inspect the gun. So when the guy opens the case and sees that my mags are loaded(even though they are not in the gun), he informs me that I am guilty of "illegally carrying a concealed weapon" and informs me that the loaded mags are considered a concealed weapon themselves. :wtf: How does a loaded mag have anything to do with the concealed law? If anything, it has to do with the loaded weapon law.

According to the CA gun laws book I got, a gun is considered "loaded" if there is an "unfired cartridge attached in any manner to the gun". Well, a loaded mag is NOT attached to the gun. Apparently the law isn't clear at all about whether carrying a loaded mag in a locked case with the gun is considered "loaded".

I've been reading these fucking laws and they seem to constantly contradict themselves. I can't believe how complicated it is to legally carry my gun and ammo to the range to shoot! I'm not even sure if it's legal to leave the gun in the car except when going directly to and from the range! The laws are clear as mud.

I still don't understand how the guy was saying that the mags themselves were a concealed weapon. I mean, if it's in a locked case, it DOESNT apply to the concealed carry law. And I don't see how it matters whether I carry loaded mags inside or right outside the loaded gun case. Apparently it's perfectly legal to have the gun locked in a case, on your passenger seat, with loaded mags in "plain view" next to the case. :wtf: I don't fucking get it.

I wonder how anal a cop would actually be about the letter of the law. I mean, unless he pulls out a book, I don't see how he could even remember all the bullshit rules!

Any insight from other CA people? Am I making too big of a deal of this? Is the guy at the gun range an idiot?

he is right, loaded mags = "loaded gun" in california. Sorry, but when you drove it to the range, you also broke the law because the gun and ammo must be in separate containers

Crazy, just crazy. I love how I could lose my right to own a gun simply from not understanding the letter of every law. :hs:

Edit: However, according to this book I have on the laws...it is legal to carry loaded mags OUTSIDE the locked gun case! So stupid!

Here's what you need to do. Keep mags unloaded (just to be safe) and either with the gun or the ammo. Keep gun locked up in case and separate from your ammo. Load up at the range.

Yep, I remember reading that you can not have ammo inside the same locked container. I just put all of it in my range back and throw it in the trunk. Locked trunk + locked case = no fuzziness in obeying the law

You'd be in trouble for transporting a firearm illegally, not carrying a concealed firearm, that's a bunch of crap.

Go to a different range. Or just go out in the desert and skip all those asstards that fuck with people cause they're bored.

IF the ammo is in the same case as the gun, your in shit for carrying a "loaded" gun.

Fish and game laws say that as long as the mag isnt loaded in the gun, its unloaded.

Thanks to hunters safety course for this info,
