    Sticky plz?

Very few people seem to know this, but it's one of the most useful, well-kept secrets about buying Apple hardware for cheap. If you are a college student you can use that fact to leverage something like 20% off of a one-time Apple hardware purchase :eek3d:

What you do is go to http://developer.apple.com/students/sthardware.html

and check out student developer connection. but the student one will give you a one-time 20% hardware discount on any apple machine you choose to buy. To be a student developer there's a $99 fee but that almost always pales in comparison to the hardware savings. :coold: Just make sure they don't try to renew your fee after the first year (I can't remember if they do or not).

AFAIK apple still offers this, unless someone knows otherwise. They used to specifically list the discount as 20% but it seems they no longer do that. I would imagine that it is around that though. :coold:

If anyone's tried it before, post in here too.

i'm not sure that it's 20% off, but it is good and is slightly better than academic pricing. All you need is to have a valid student ID and pay $99. Being a student developer some times also results in them shipping you a copy of the OS for free as well when a major new release (i.e. Panther) comes out, which alone pays for itself. My girlfriend bought her Powerbook this way :bigthumb:

    yea, i did that.
its ONE TIME only tho. But you have to factor in the 99$ of the membership. The bonus to that is that you get OSes for free as well as dev tools, and other cool stuff from it.

:coold: you did it? How much did they give you off the powerbook? (don't factor in the $99 membership cost)

They used to report specifically that it was 20% off but they don't do that anymore, so I'm curious to see what the average value is now. :dunno:

well mine was $1919 and one built w/o any discounts at all would have been $2399. thats $480 before the joining fee and $380 after the joining fee. well worth it IMO

I'm going to the apple store today. I'm getting a 15" powerbook, 1.5ghz, superdrive with backlit keyboard...128meg of video while I'm at it...

So...let's see what the discount comes to at the end of the day :big grin:

Is it 20% off the educational discount? Or is it 20% off the retail price?

I went to the store, but my friend wasn't working today...gotta ask her in school then.

its more than the educational discount. retail price was $2499, the educational discount was $2299, and the developer discount was $1999. all before taxes.

:coold: that's exactly 20%, before adding the $99 fee.

Very chill... and yes this is off the retail price, and no I don't think they will facilitate the one-time purchase at the apple stores, it must be ordered online.
