I need tomcat 5.5/6 hosting and the option of a private jvm.. these seem rare without buying a dedicated server :hs:

This is actually a pretty good idea... hostgator seem to have reasonable rates.

With a vps am I generally in charge of OS updates / security etc? or only for the services I install?

If you go for a VPS with hostgator use the coupon 'dpthanks' as it's 50% off the first month. Any VPS plan.
