    Hey guys,

Well I've been interested in joining an MA club, and I now want to join more than ever. Never done MA before (well except for when I was like 7, done like a year of Judo, but really doesn't count). I'm now 27 btw.

So here is my question. I'm hesitating between 2 disciplines: Muyai Thai, or Mix Martial Art (the club I'll go to offers a mix of Boxing, Kick Boxing, Karate, Muay Thai and Aikido).

So which one should I choose? Is MMA any good? And am I too old to start?

    Thanks brotatos

Aikido is the only way to go if you really want to kick some ass.

seriously, research them. Watch people competing in each. Decide which one you want to do. To expect people who dont know anything about you to decide what you should train in is kind of retarded.

LOL exactly, it's like walking up to someone on the street and asking what college class to take, although that might yield some positive suggestion.

What are you looking for really? You want to learn something traditional, or something new. I personally wouldn't join a gym that said MMA or trained in that . I guess I'm ignorant, but I'd rather train in the traditional arts and blend them together at the same gym or with others.

Look you're never to old to start, look at Randy Couture, that motherfucker reinvented himself when most from his generation have fallen from grace. Although he does have talent lol.

It really depends what you want. Try to get a free class of each or something. If you just want to learn the stand up game, boxing and muay thai would be your best bets.

OK, here is what I want out of it. I've never been in a fight in my life. Never hit someone, and never got hit.

A couple of years ago, this douchebag, who was like 5 years younger than me, was really bugging my ex g/f. I called him up, and he said something like "well why don't you come over here and talk to me face to face?" Well I chickened out. I didn't go.

See, I feel like I'm a fucking pussy, and don't want that scenario to repeat itself.

So basically, I want something to teach me self defense, and just learn how to kick some asses (and receive some punches as well).

I know this sounds like I'm a fucking pussy, well I am.

Here is a pic of me recently taken (a couple of weeks ago)

    I'm a bit bigger now.

The best suggestion in this thread so far was going to each one and trying it out once. Almost every single gym will offer at least 1 class for free.. so try it out and see which one you like best.

You should never go to someone else's location to fight. If they get hurt, the law is not on your side.

I'd go with Muay Thai as well, a solid leg kick will usually stop people in their tracks and its much better from a legal standpoint than knocking someone out and having their head hit concrete on the way down. Either way you shouldn't be getting into fights with people over stupid words spoken over a phone.

training to learn how to fight people on streets and :kick asses" is retarded.

take Aikido and learn how to play the bass.

    Street fighting is awesome.

You will break your hand and end up with a 10,000 surgery to put a 4 inch pin in your hand.

fuck taking classes, if you want to learn to street fight then fight on the street. you can't learn streetfighting in a gym bro, so just fight everyone all the time. here's what your training schedule should look like:
thursday - fight at least 3 people at the bars
friday - fight at least 4 people
    saturday - 5 people
sunday - wed = rest your body so you can fight more

Honestly Style you're not going to be taken serious here. That situation you cited is honestly a pathetic excuse for wanting to take any form of martial art. If you went into a place that wasn't desperate for your cash during this recession or complete fucking 'tards working there they will turn your ass away, and that can be your indication of a place you should be training at. Fighting over petty shit is pointless, and it could lead to charges.

Ear area with the right, the left hook hit his jaw.

Glad he fell, it took the fight right out of me. It didnt hurt because of the adrenaline but I knew something was seriously wrong.
