    2002 LS coupe manual trans.
I am first time car owner, very noob. I got this car from an auction. everything works well except i cant figure out how to reverse. all gears from 1 to 5 works good.
Ok, first I stepped on the clutch and pulled the stick to reverse position (driver's far right, bottom). When i slowly released the clutch pedal and slightly stepped on the gas pedal, the engine revved up but the stick bounced back to neutral by itself. if i used my hand to hold the stick in the reverse position to prevent it from boucing back to neutral while slowly releasing the clutch, i heard some loud noise of two rough surfaces rubbing against each other.
does it look like something needs to be replaced/fixed? and how much would it cost (approx.)? or do I need to do some trick to get it to reverse?

Bad synchros, bad linkage, bad arm in the trans....
Or you just don't have it lined up quite right.

There shouldn't be any kind of trick, it's not a Volkswagen.

Try revving the engine and the putting it in R.
Or try putting it in R with the engine off, then start and see if it will go when you let the clutch out.

Could be the prior owner DID think Reverse was synchronized. In any event, the sides of the teeth on the sliding gear should be beveled so as to allow the gear to "push and shove" it's way into place when the teeth aren't perfectly-aligned.

    If:

    1. there's no little finger-hold on the shifter boot for you to pull up on to unlock the Reverse gate
    2. you can't push down on the shift knob to get the same effect
    3. the Reverse gate isn't shaped like a "7" (where you have to push out past the gate to actually slip the shifter into the gate, like on a Hyundai)
    4. you can't engage Reverse even while rolling the car slowly

    Then:

    1. something in your transmission is fucked in a vertical fashion.
    2. There is no 2.
