I've now officially decided that my hard drive is dying (more frequent "squeaking" sound and for longer periods of time). Thus, I've ordered a new WD Caviar 40GB drive (same size as my current drive), and I'll need to mirror it EXACTLY as I don't feel like fucking around with a new installation (just did one recently, no reason to do another since this one is working pretty well). When I say mirror it exactly, I mean not just the files, but the boot sectors and such as well, so I can just mirror it over, replace the old drive and boot up with the system acting the same as it did before.

Can anyone suggest free software that will do this? I need it to NOT be windows software, since I don't run windows, preferably it should be something I can boot into (so that the hard drive isn't in use while I'm mirroring it). I thought of Norton Ghost, but it's not free. Anyone know whether the free trial will work for my purposes?

Ah, cool. I'd wondered whether it would come with some software to do this. I'll be ordering on Monday or Tuesday so hopefully I'll have it all transfered over sometime next week.

Then I'll have an extra 40GB Maxtor IDE drive sitting around. I'm pretty sure they wont warrantee it, since it was OEM, so I'll probably just use it for extra storage of non-essentials (read: porn) or something. Once it dies maybe I'll take it apart and do something cool with it :coold:

If you didn't order an OEM boxed version, you can download the tool off of WD.

But buy Ghost - it roxors :big grin:

I'm not sure whether it's boxed or OEM, but I guess I'll find out.
