Made in 1973. It has a battery model number px625. Do I need the battery for this to take photos?

Press the button, does it go click?

You can get battery adapters for old cameras, go here and click on mercury battery adapters: http://www.criscam.com/

I'm willing to bet the shutter is mechanical and the battery was only for the meter.
